Anite M. Aucoin Girouard

Anite Girouard passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 26, 2016 in Biloxi. She was 97. Anite, a New Iberia, Louisiana, native, spent the final 85 years of her life in Biloxi, the matriarch of a 42-member family. Anite was known by most as “Nit.” She was a devout Catholic her entire life, an accomplished seamstress as a mother to three girls and best friend to a bevy of priests. A staunch churchgoer, Nit was a longtime member of St. Michael Catholic Church in Biloxi, even serving as the church rectory’s housekeeper for more than 15 years late in life. She was the quintessential Coast woman from south Louisiana – a little lady with a big, feisty personality who spoke Cajun French. A widow for the last 42 years of her life, Nit was a talented seamstress, also crocheting and quilting. She made wedding dresses, ball gowns and, even, sewed cloths for the St. Michael altar. Later in life, she worked for DeJean Packing Company and Leckich & Fayard’s Seafood Factory. Nit was a charter member of the Fleur De Lis Society (The French Club) and was a member of St. Michael Catholic Church Altar Society, Jolly Travelers, Golden Age travelers, the committee of the Blessing of the Fleet, Sacred Heart Academy parent-teacher association and volunteered at St. Michael Senior Citizen Center teaching quilting. Nit was preceded in death by parents, Honora Aucoin and Cordelia Babin; husband, Ramsey P. Girouard; daughter, Claudette Champaigne; sons-in-law, Roger Champaigne and Joseph Leckich; and granddaughter, Jody Leckich Pickich. She is survived by daughters, Cordelia Girouard Leckich and Rose Ann Girouard Schultz (Tommy); grandchildren, Christina Champaigne Saucier (Keith), Michael Champaigne (Karen), Rose Love Dellenger (Stan), Lezlee Champaigne Hardin (Jim), Dana Voivedich Farris (Chris), Elliott Voivedich, Mark Leckich (Diane), Jason Leckich (Eileen), David Leckich (Ann Marie), John Leckich (Louise) and Reva Schultz Hopkins (Glenn). She is also survived by 20 great-grandchildren, nine great-great-grandchildren and her nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to St. Michael Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church on Friday, April 29, 2016 at 10:00 am. Friends may visit from 9:00 am until mass time. Interment will follow at Biloxi City Cemetery. A reception will follow at The French Club. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
