Connie Mullen

Our family has experienced a great loss with the death of our mother, Mrs. Connie V. Mullen, Monday, August 19, 2013, at home surrounded by her children. We are at peace in the knowledge that she is now in the presence of her Heavenly Father. She was born on December 21, 1928 in Stone County, MS to Mrs. Edwina Barton and Charleton Bond, and was raised by her stepfather Ramsey Barton. She had three sisters, Jerry Geihone, and Lee Graves who proceeded her in death, and Margaret (Jackie) Lee Slater of Woolmarket, MS, as well as two brothers, Hewitt Barton, Sr. of D’Iberville, MS and James Barton of Saucier, MS. Mrs. Mullen was married to Charles Edward Mullen for 65 years when he passed away on May 12, 2007. They lived in Biloxi, MS on Percy St. for 59 years until Hurricane Katrina destroyed their home. Their marriage produced eight children, Eddie Mullen and wife, Ida, of D’Iberville, MS, Judy Smith and husband, Donald, of Slidell, LA, Johnny Mullen of Biloxi, MS, Danny Mullen and wife, Virginia, of Vancleave, MS, Richard Mullen and wife, Wanda, of Baltimore, MD, Phillip Mullen and wife, Robin, of Latimer, MS, Joseph Mullen and his partner, David Wilson, of Sun, LA, and Alex Mullen and wife, Tanya, of Biloxi, MS. She was the proud grandmother to Donald Smith, Jr., Vanessa Stanley, Rachel Smith, Johnny Mullen, Jr., David Mullen, Herbie Mullen, Eric Mullen, Kevin Mullen, Phillip Mullen, Jr., Brandon Mullen, Brittany Berry, and Anne-Marie Berry. She is also survived by her great-grandchildren, Hayden Smith, Ryder Smith, Sloan Smith, Blake “Little Pat” Stanley, Taylor Mullen, Kaitlyn Wilson, River Mullen, Hunter Mullen, Shelby Morton, Trey Morton, Emma Mullen, and Owen Mullen. She is also survived by a special nephew Bobby Jordan, whom she thought of as a son and many other nieces and nephews. Mrs. Mullen was of the Methodist faith and was an active member of the First United Methodist Church of Biloxi, where she served on numerous committees. She was active in the relocation of the church from Hopkins Boulevard to Highway 67 after Hurricane Katrina. Mrs. Mullen was a firm believer in knowing what her children were doing and was involved in PTA activities with all her children from the time they were in elementary school at Gorenflo through their high school years at Biloxi High. Mrs. Mullen was an inspiration to her fellow members of Planet Fitness Gym where she was an active participant for 30 years going three days a week, until the age of 82. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her but we know she is now reunited with her husband, family and friends who have gone before and now welcome her home. Visitation will be from 6:00 ~ 8:00 pm on Wednesday, August 21, 2013 at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe. Funeral services will be at 10:00 am on Thursday, August 22, 2013 at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe. Interment will follow in Biloxi National Cemetery, where she will be laid to rest with her husband. Our many thanks go to the nurses and nurse techs at Biloxi Regional Medical Center, Dr. Ben Chaney and his staff, and Southern Care Hospice for the care of our mother. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Jude Children’s Hospital in her name to: 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 (800-805-5856). View and sign register book at www.bradfordokeefe.com
