Eleanor Agnes Astorgia Phulps

Eleanor Phulps was born in Sacramento, CA on April 17, 1913. She passed away from this life on Saturday, January 4, 2014 in Gulfport. She was preceded in death by her parents, Alexander and Eva Astorgia; her brothers, Fred and Raymond; her sisters, Rosamond and Goldie; and her grandson, Dean R.Teston. Mrs. Phulps is survived by her daughter, Beverly and her husband, Charles “Chuck” Teston of Gulfport; her sister Geraldine Grace Goss; her grandchildren, Chris Teston and Charlene Teston; nephews, Harvey (Erica) and Eugene (Susan) Goss of California and numerous other nephews and nieces. Eleanor worked for 25 years for the Northern California Butchers Union and 15 years for the U.S. Air Force Commissary Systems. In her off time she headed up a catering service. When her first husband died in 1940 she became a single parent caring for her mother, daughter and niece. During World War II, she drove a semi-truck to help the war effort. She has always been a devoted Roman Catholic and gave lovingly of her volunteer time as president of Holy Angels Grammar School Mothers’ Club and St. Joseph Academy High School. She helped with fund raising for the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, and also for the Sisters of Mercy, Sisters of St. Francis, and Sisters of Social Services. She also helped U.S. Service Personnel at the USO. After retiring in California from the U.S. Government in 1993, she moved to be with her family in Lyman, MS. Eleanor lived her life for her church and for others. She volunteered for snack bar duty at American Legion Post #119 of which she was a member. She assisted the mentally challenged at Special Olympics and bowling. She attended sports, dances, and parties with grandson, Chris, a special person. The Sacramento area received her volunteer work with the handicapable also. She was an amazing woman with a big heart, strong faith, love of family and she touched many people. Eleanor attended the Lyman Senior Center, County Farm Road for years creating quilts, aprons, ceramics and T-shirt stamping. She inspired others to participate and give to the community. Eleanor was unselfish. Eleanor’s family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Stephen Johns of the Driftwood Nursing Center and to their nurses, aides and staff. Special thanks to the Norte Dame Hospice Team that provided family support and gave the family a sense of peace as Eleanor passed away. Special thanks to Father Murphy at St. Joseph’s, Sister Cursillio of St. James, Sister Mary McDermot, Edie and Joyce of Our Lady of Fatima, and the staff of St. John Catholic Church. Eleanor was one of a kind, a staunch supporter of her city of Gulfport. Eleanor will be truly missed by all who knew her. God bless Eleanor and the world is a better place due to your efforts. In lieu of flowers, Eleanor preferred memorials to the hadicapable Alleycat Bowling Team of the Coast, C/O Dean Oliver, 15043 Hudson-Krohn Rd., Biloxi, MS 39532 or to the Humane Society of South MS, 2615 25th Ave., Gulfport, MS 39501. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Gulfport at 11:00 a.m. with visitation one hour before at the church.
