Eugene is a veteran of the Korean War. During his military career he earned the WWII Victory medal, United Nations, National Defense w/bronze star, Korean Theater before retiring as a commander from the United States Coast Guard in February 1971. He served for 21 years. After retiring from the Coast Guard, Eugene moved his family to the Mississippi Gulf Coast where he remained until his death.

He grew up Dayton, Ohio with his parents and brother. He graduated high school early and joined the United States Coast Guard. He graduated from the Coast Guard Academy in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Gene went on to earn a Master of Science, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering degree from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1960.

He accomplished many things over the years:

• Instructor of Engineering, Jefferson Davis Campus 1987-1991

• Lector, St. Joseph’s Church and member of the choir since 1982

• U.S. Coast Guard Academy Alumni Association

• Harrison County Democratic Executive Committee Chairman, 1992

• Member of the Computer Science Club

• AARP Volunteer Tax preparer

Though he has accomplished so many things in his lifetime, his family considers his greatest accomplishment to be that of husband and father. Gene and Irene were married June 7, 1952 and spent the next 62 years building a life and family together. In the course of their marriage they raised six children and contributed to the community they lived in and loved. Eugene will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Visitation will be held at the Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home on O’Neal Road in Gulfport on Sunday, March 15, 2015 from 5:00 to 7:00 pm. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 16, 2015 at 11: 00 am at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Orange Grove. Interment will be at a later date at Biloxi National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family prefers that memorial contributions be made in Gene's honor to Gentiva Hospice, 962 Tommy Munro Dr. Ste. E, Biloxi, MS 39532. The exemplary care our father received during his illness - and their ongoing care of our mother - is above and beyond the call of duty in both its professionalism and loving kindness. The family would like to especially express their appreciation and gratitude to Dr. Broussard and his wonderful staff.
