Evelyn Scarborough Wallace

Evelyn Scarborough Wallace, 93, of Ocean Springs, MS, went to her Heavenly home on October 1, 2015. She was born on May 6, 1922, in Wrightsville, GA, to William Turner and Myra E. (Renfroe) Scarborough, deceased. Evelyn married Army SFC Oscar Wallace in 1945, who preceded her in death on March 3, 1998. During their 53 year marriage, they lived in Auburn, AL; Verdun, France; Columbus, GA; and Columbus, MS. Evelyn had a quick, keen mind and rarely met a cryptogram puzzle she couldn’t conquer. She had a love of reading especially enjoying murder mysteries and thrillers. If you knew Evelyn, you knew of her great respect for education and encouraged everyone to pursue more schooling. Evelyn’s life was an example of simplicity, frugalness, and independence. She was a very private person, handling her own accounts and personal life with confidence. After attending the University of Georgia, Evelyn taught kindergarten in Muscogee County, GA. While in Columbus, MS, Evelyn worked until retirement at Columbus Air Force Base first at the Base Chapel and later, as a private secretary for Civil Engineers. She leaves behind her children: Sharon A. Wallace Hinsley (Larry) of Tallahassee, FL; Glenn E. Wallace of Ocean Springs, MS; Kenny A. Wallace (Julie) of Ashland City, TN; and Pamela O. Wallace Kelly (Jerry) of Santa Rosa Beach, FL. She was “MeMaw” to her grandchildren and great¬-grandchildren and had huge pride in them: Nathan (Kelsey) and Jonathan (Shannon) Kelly of Santa Rosa Beach, FL, Laura K. Hinsley Rabakon (Michael) and Amy L. Hinsley of Austin, TX; great-grandchildren, Russell A. Mann and Evelyn Rose Kelly. Sibling survivors are her brothers, Ferris Scarborough (Ramona) of Hamilton, GA, and Otto Scarborough of Phenix City, AL. She is preceded in death by her sisters, Mavis McCall and Aurelia Strickland; and brother, Maurice Scarborough. “He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” Micah 6:8. In recognition of Evelyn’s favorite scripture, the family requests donations, in lieu of flowers, in her memory to Centerpointe Church, PO Box 1303, Ocean Springs, MS 39566. The family wishes to thank the medical team at Camellia Hospice and the Gardens Assisted Living for their care of Evelyn. Visitation will be on Monday, October 5, 2015 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and a memorial service will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, 911 Porter Ave, Ocean Springs, MS 39564, (228) 875-1266, with Pastor Ted Pagel officiating. Evelyn will be laid to rest in the Biloxi National Cemetery, MS, with her husband.
