Mrs. Gertrude Alma Galy Ellzey, age 95, of Biloxi, passed away peacefully Monday, December 17, 2012 in her sleep.
Mrs. Ellzey was a beloved school teacher for many years in Biloxi and D’Iberville. She began her teaching career at Sacred Heart Academy as a substitute teacher. After her time at Sacred Heart Academy, she began teaching at St. Michael Elementary School in Biloxi. Her journey continued at St. Theresa Elementary School and from there to Sacred Heart Elementary School in D’Iberville until the time of her retirement at the age of 75. Over her 36 years of teaching Mrs. Ellzey won numerous awards. She received the Proclamation Day Award in the city of D’Iberville from Mayor Jerry Lawrence on June 1, 1990. She went on to receive the Distinguished Teacher Award from the State of Mississippi National Catholic Educational Association 1983 called the Miriam Joseph Farrell Award. She traveled to Washington D.C. to receive her award. She will be missed by all that knew her.
Mrs. Ellzey is preceded in death by her parents, George E. and Alma Boudreaux Galy; husband of 38 years, Joseph Eugene Ellzey, Sr.; sister, Helen Galy Murrell; brother, Arsane Galy; two nieces, Dianna Murrell Thornton and Beverly Galy Trahan; and daughter-in-law, Virginia Buford Ellzey.
Her survivors include her sons, Joseph Eugene Ellzey, Jr. (Donna) and John Samuel Ellzey, Sr. (Cathy); daughter, Jane Ellzey Sloop (Andrew); grandchildren, Joseph Eugene Ellzey III (Christy), Jimmy Ellzey, John Samuel Ellzey, Jr., Angelia Lynn Ellzey, Lynn Ann, Mark Sloop, Jennifer Woodward (Dago); special care giver and niece, Barbara Murrell; 15 great-grandchildren, two great great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be Friday, December 21, 2012 at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be Saturday, December 22, 2012 at Nativity B.V.M. Cathedral at 10:00 a.m. Friends may visit one hour prior. Burial will follow at Biloxi City Cemetery.
