Iris Puzz Vierling

Iris Puzz Vierling, beloved wife and mother, 90, departed this world on September 5, 2016 on her heavenly journey to again join all the members of her family who preceded her. Included are her father, Andrew Puzz and mother, Gertrude Anglada Puzz; sisters, Margaret (Tony) Rosetti, Violet (Steve) Bowen and Dale (Guy) Mansi; and brothers, Donald (Betty) Puzz, Andrew (Shirley) Puzz and Larry (Delores) Puzz. Iris was born in Biloxi on September 22, 1925 and dedicated her life to the service of God through her Catholic faith and her career as a registered nurse practitioner. At the age of 13 she planned to be a nurse and never changed her mind. She was a graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, Biloxi Hospital School of Nursing and the University of Alabama Birmingham Nurse Practitioner Program. Her 30-year nursing career ended with a medical retirement from the Veterans Administration in Biloxi. After retirement, Iris pursued three of her favorite hobbies, shopping, bingo and oil painting, the latter guided by her niece, Liz Rosetti. She gave paintings to friends and family and kept many at home displayed in every room, until a tornado in Katrina took them away along with the rest of the house. She was a longtime member of Nativity B.V.M. Cathedral, member of the Alter Society, a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and of the Biloxi Art Association. To her family, friends and relatives she will be remembered as a loving, caring and generous person. Over many years she contributed to her Church and many other charities, St. Jude Children’s Hospital being one of her favorites. Included in those left to mourn her passing are her husband of 70 years, William “Buddy” Vierling; sons, William “Bill” (Nam) Vierling, Jr. and James “Jim” (Jantima) Vierling both currently residing in Thailand; as well as one daughter, Maureen (John) McCann who resides in Vancleave. Many grandchildren will also mourn her passing including Victoria Diaz, Drew Vierling, Katie McCann, Allison Smith, Richard Coursey, Michael Coursey, Ilse Trauth, Will Vierling, Jennifer Vierling, Sam Vierling and Anna Lisa Vierling. Many great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins will also miss her greatly. The Vierling family would like to thank Dr. Pavlov and staff for their care of Iris over the past several years and especially through her bout with dementia. Our gratitude also goes to the personnel of the Hospice of Light as well as to our wonderful friends, Jeannie DeGeorge, Darlene Lamey and Pat Reddix, whose kindness and caring was and is very much appreciated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her honor to her favorite charity, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis TN 38105 or by calling 1-800-822-6344. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Nativity B.V.M. Cathedral in Biloxi on Friday, September 9, 2016 at 1:00 p.m. Visitation for family and friends will begin at 12:00 p.m. Entombment will follow at Southern Memorial Park in Biloxi. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
