Jerry Hartfield Sr., 92, died September 9, 2012, in Ft. Smith, Arkansas. He was born July 24, 1920 in Purvis, Mississippi to Alma and Joseph E. Hartfield. He is proceeded in death by his parents, his wife; Carnie V. Rouse Hartfield, his brothers; Bennie Hartfield, Kermit Hartfield, Joe Hartfield, and Zebedee Hartfield, his sisters; Bertha White, Rebecca Stanley, and Ellen Addison. Jerry is survived by his daughter; Sandra (Terry) Mitchell of Gulfport, MS, his son; Jerry (Jane) Hartfield Jr. of Ft. Smith, Arkansas, a sister; Annie Mae Rainey of Metairie, LA, 5 grandchildren; Terry (Pam) Mitchell Jr. of Gulfport, MS, Allison (Bin) Boggess of Gulfport, MS, Scott (Elise) Mitchell of Gulfport, MS, Jerry (Cara) Hartfield III of Fayetteville, AK, and Eleanor (Windell) Wallace of Greenwood, AK; ten great-grandchildren, and one great great-granddaughter.
Jerry was a 1939 graduate of Purvis High School, and resided in Gulfport since the year 1947. He served 3 years and 2 months during WWII in the Army Air Corps school of Aircraft, Mechanics, and Gunnery. He attended the University of Mississippi extension center in Gulfport, received a certificate in Banking, and soon went on to retire from Hancock Bank after a long, successful career.
Jerry was a dedicated member of First Baptist Church of Gulfport, where he served as a Deacon, as well as a member of the Adult II Sunday school class. He was also a member of many civic clubs throughout his lifetime. He received a Pine Burr award from several years in the Boy Scout program; he was named Scout Master of First Baptist Troop 202, and served on the Pine Burr Area council. Jerry also served as president of the Gulfport Noon Day Lions Club. He enjoyed watching sports, fishing, gardening, and was an avid golfer. The most important thing in Jerry’s life was family, and he also held many friends close to his heart.
Services will be held Thursday September 13, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport where friends may visit beginning at 10:00 am. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery, Gulfport.
