Joyce Whiten, born May 11, 1929 in Adamsville, AL passed away Monday, February 5, 2018 in Gulfport. She was 88 years old.
Mrs. Whiten was an avid bowler, enjoying a long career that began in her youth. After moving to the Gulf Coast in the early 1960’s she became a member of the Gulf Coast Women’s Bowling Association, serving as Director from 1965-1968, 1973-1978 and later as President for 22 years. From 1982-1986 she was a member of the MWBA Board of Directors, serving as Sgt-at-Arms from 1986-1995. Mrs. Whiten was elected to the MWBA Hall of Fame in 1996 receiving both Meritorious Service and Superior Performance. After retirement, she was given the honor of Member Emerita and awarded a Life Membership with the GCWBA. Mrs. Whiten was a member of Grace Memorial Baptist Church.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Andrew Wilson Whiten; her parents, Lonnie and Julia Slaughter Humphreys; her brothers, Julius, Leon and William Humphreys; and her sisters, Juanita Lovvorn and Geraldean Eidson.
Mrs. Whiten is survived by her brother, Lonnie Terrell Humphreys (CJ) of Hilton Head, SC; her sons, Lonnie (Diane), Duane (Mary), Gary and Terrell Whiten; her daughter, Cindy (Mike) Chambliss; 8 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren.
The family would like to thank Lakeview Nursing Center and Southern Care Hospice for the care she received.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Grace Memorial Baptist Church Missions Fund.
The Funeral Service will be Friday, February 9, 2018 at Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport at 11:00 am where friends may visit beginning at 9:30 am. Interment will be in Evergreen Gardens, Gulfport.
