Mr. Leroy “Roy” Yates (USA Chief Warrant Officer, Ret.) of Perkinston, MS passed away, due to natural causes, at his home on January 11, 2018.
Roy was born to Joseph S. and Malta Yates on September 7, 1936 in Honaker, Floyd County, KY. After graduating high school, Roy entered the military, serving thirteen-plus years in the USAF, where he rose to achieve MSGT in Aircraft Control and Warning. He was awarded three Air Force Commendation Medals.
Upon entering the Warrant Officer Program, Roy served another seven-plus years as a Computer Specialist, during which he earned his BS degree in Computer Science, achieving valedictorian of his class at University of Mary Hardin–Baylor, and various awards including: USA Commendation Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, and various other US Unit Awards. Service included tours in Vietnam, and North Africa before ending his military career at Fort Hood, TX.
Thereafter, Roy entered into a second career in banking, leaving Bank of America after eighteen years of service as VP of Information Services.
He moved back to MS with Hancock Bank in Gulfport for an additional sixteen years until eventual retirement, spending his final years outside of Wiggins, MS.
He is preceded in death by both parents; and his brother, Mannifred Yates (KIA Vietnam AF, FAC, Pilot).
Roy is survived by his wife, June; his two sons, Lee and Chris; and four grandchildren.
A Graveside Service with Military Honors will be held at Biloxi National Cemetery Wednesday, January 17, 2018 at 2:30 pm.
