On December 26, 2012, the Heaven's rejoiced in welcoming Martha Murphy to God's eternal celebration. January 19, 2013, would have been her 85th birthday.
Martha was born in St. Louis, MO and graduated from Brentwood High School in 1942. Some of her happiest memories were of helping care for her three younger siblings and working at the soda fountain in the family drugstore. She aspired to become a pharmacist and was one of the first woman graduates of St. Louis College of Pharmacy.
While working as a young career woman she met a recently returned serviceman who stole her heart. Martha was the beloved wife of Robert "Bob" Murphy of 55 years. They traveled the world for 40 years as Bob worked in the international construction business. Martha had an amazing ability to learn and adapt to new languages and cultures.
She was a very gifted cook and created many wonderful meals while living in the developing world. Bridge was a passion for her and she taught classes for beginners. Martha played softball in high school and was a lifelong St. Louis Cardinal fan.
Martha and Bob retired to the Gulf Coast. She was a faithful member of St. Mary's Catholic Church of Gautier. Martha also served as a volunteer pharmacist at the St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy in Biloxi. Although her presence and talents will be greatly missed here on this earth, her legacy of love and service will be carried on in the hearts of all those whose lives she touched.
Martha was the beloved wife of Bob Murphy of Moss Point, MS. She was the loving mother of Cathy, mother-in-law of Steve and grandmother of Robert and Danny, all of Mansfield, OH. She will be dearly missed by her siblings, Richard Hounsom, Helen Stein and Marian Lewis and their families. She was preceded into Heaven by her parents Marie and Hobart Hounsom.
The Murphy family would like to thank the nurses and physicians at Ocean Springs Hospital ICU for their kindness and compassion.
A special Time of Rememberance will be held on Saturday, December 29, 2012, from 4 pm until 6 pm, at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home in Mississippi. Visitation will also be held on Wednesday, January 2, 2013, from 11 am until 1 pm, with a 1:45 pm chapel service, all at the Fey Funeral Home in St. Louis, MO. Burial will follow at 2:15 pm in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials be sent to the St. Vincent de Paul Community Pharmacy, P.O. Box 1228, Biloxi, MS. 39533.
