Mary Ann Huey

Mary Ann Huey, age 79, passed peacefully on the afternoon of July 2nd at Piedmont Hospital in Atlanta. Surrounded by her family, Mary spent her final, quiet days among those she loved, those who loved her. Mary Ann, the oldest of four children and an only daughter, was born in Sheboygan, Wisconsin on August 26, 1934 to Eloise and Arnold Furlotte. As a child, she moved with her family to Memphis, Tennessee, where she would spend her adolescence and young adulthood. She received a B.A. in Journalism from Memphis State College (now the University of Memphis) in 1956. She served as editor of the Tiger Rag, the Memphis State newspaper, and alongside her other contributions to the publication, Mary composed an op-ed advocating for the de-segregation of the campus. While at Memphis State, one of Mary’s suitors asked a buddy of his for a favor: to fill in for him one evening and take Mary out on the town. His buddy agreed gladly—and so Mary Ann Furlotte and Don Booten Huey met. The couple wed 80 days later in Memphis on the 11th of February 1956. Throughout their marriage, Mary and Don lived in Memphis; Brighton, Colorado; Alexandria, Louisiana; Louisville, Mississippi; and Long Beach, Mississippi, where they most recently resided with their son and his family. Mary received a Masters of Religious Education from Loyola University, New Orleans in 1989. She was a member of Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach for over three decades. At Saint Thomas, both Mary and Don served as founding facilitators in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults program. Mary earned the title of Silver Life Master from the American Contract Bridge League and served on the board of directors for her local bridge club. Mary is survived by her husband, Don; her brother, Thomas Furlotte; her children, Linda Grusenmeyer (Patrick), Reatha Clark (Michael), Howard Griffith Huey (Anita), Patrick Huey (Rachelle), Narda Beckman (John), Andrew Huey (Anita), and Cara Huey; her grandchildren, Amanda, Erin, Megan, Matthew; Amanda, Sarah, Bradley, Jacob; Craig; Reagan, Taylor, Madison; Mary Camille, Irene, Ella; Kevin, Kathleen, Kyle; and her sweet, new great-granddaughter, 10-month-old Abigail. Even in her last days, Mary continued to inspire those around her with her sharp wit, her kindness and caring, her deep faith, her strength and her spirit. Family and friends will gather from 5:00 to 7:00 pm on Monday, July 7, 2014, at Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport. Mary’s Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, July 8, 2014, at Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church in Long Beach. Interment Biloxi National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to Catholic Charities Diocese of Biloxi, 1790 Popps Ferry Rd, Biloxi, MS 39532 or the charity of your choice.
