Mitchell Rushing "Mitch" Callander, age 93, of Biloxi, MS passed away on Saturday, October 25, 2014, in Baton Rouge, LA. Mitchell was born on May 12, 1921, in Unionville, Union County, NC, the second of nine children. She graduated from Unionville High School Class of 1940. During WWII, she worked at US Rubber Company in Charlotte, NC making 40 millimeter shells. She married her husband, Robert, in 1942 in Monks Corner, SC. She became a military wife and lived in Morris Field, Charlotte, NC, Barksdale AFB, LA, Austin, TX, Symra, TN, Langley AFB, VA, Sculthrope AFB, England and Keesler AFB, Biloxi, MS. She lived in Biloxi from 1955-2007, living in Seashore Manor until it closed after Hurricane Katrina. She then moved to Baton Rouge, LA due to the shortage of senior citizen residences. Mitchell was a member of First Baptist Church of Biloxi, Red Cross Volunteer, Chairman of Blood Bank for Volunteers and a Girl Scout Leader at KAFB. She was a pre-school teacher and a Sunday School teacher at FBC and later became a member of the Agape Sunday School Class for seniors. Her hobbies were gardening, knitting, reading and traveling and was an avid square dancer. Mitchell never met a stranger and was always there to help others whether she knew them or not. She was a very giving and caring person and will be greatly missed by her family and the many friends she made over the past 93 years. Mitchell was preceded in death by her husband, Robert E. Callander, Sr, parents, James and Rossie Simpson Rushing, two sisters, Mildred Rushing Kirkland and Mary Rushing Roughton, three brothers, James Rushing, Leroy Rushing and Judge Walter Rushing. Survivors include a son, Robert E. (Kay) Callander Jr of Baton Rouge, LA, daughter, Becki Callander (Robert Lynn) Borries of Ocean Springs, MS, sister, Verla Rushing Kepple of Monroe, NC, two brothers, Hoyt Rushing and Arlie Rushing, both of Unionville, NC, grandchildren, Lee (Jolie) Borries of Warrensburg, MO, Lynn (Tiffany) Borries of Summerset, SD, and Matthew Callander of Marquette, MI, great-grandchildren, Hannah Borries and Emma Borries, both of Summerset, SD, Brennen Borries, Cameron Borries and Tristan Borries, all from Warrensburg, MO and numerous nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly. Private services will be held for Mitch and she will be buried with her husband at the Biloxi National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family would prefer donations be made to Biloxi First Educational Grants for Biloxi Public Schools or a charity of your choice. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
