Dr. Morton Franklin “Bud” Longnecker, Jr., died September 8, 2012 in Gulfport after a brief illness. Bud was born in Winchester, Indiana on December 12, 1936 to Morton F. Sr. and Sarah Davis Horton Longnecker. He attended De Pauw University in Greencastle, IN as a Rector Scholar where he was a member of Sigma Nu Fraternity. After graduation, he went on to attend the University of Indiana Medical School where he graduated with honors. Dr. Longnecker did his internship at Keesler Air Force Base Medical Center in Biloxi, MS, and then returned several years later following his residency at the National Naval Hospital in Bethesda, Maryland as head of Orthopedic Surgery. He took a special hand fellowship at the University of Iowa and was an active member of the American Orthopedic Association. In 1972, after establishing a private practice in Biloxi, Dr. Longnecker joined fellow associates in the establishment of the Gulf Coast Community Hospital in which he was a founding member. He was an active member of the American Medical Association plus many state and national orthopedic organizations as well as within his community. Dr. Longnecker leaves behind his wife, Shannon Nelms Longnecker, sons, Michael (DeeDee) Longnecker, Gregory (Mamie) Longnecker, and Michael (Keri) Nelms all of Honolulu, HI. His seven grandchildren include 1st Lieutenant Lauren Longnecker Frazier, Taylor Longnecker, Christian Longnecker, and Hannah Longnecker, Lauren Philips, Luke and Liana Longnecker. The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. on Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Pass Road Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, 2511 Pass Road, Biloxi, MS 39531. (228) 388-1811. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials be made to the American Cancer Society, 417 Security Square, Gulfport, MS 39507.
