Norma Martha Broadus

Norma Martha Broadus, age 79, went “home” on May 4, 2018 after an unforeseen complication from a previous surgery. Norma was born in Biloxi on June 14, 1938 to Noel and Ethel Broadus. She was a graduate of William Carey University (B.S.) and University of Southern Mississippi (M.S.). Norma taught school in Jackson County for almost 20 years before retiring early to provide round-the-clock care for her mother and her brother. Norma was a charter member of Temple Baptist Church in Biloxi and remained an active member from the church’s inception in 1953 throughout her lifetime, serving in various capacities as treasurer, Sunday School teacher, member of Temple Ladies Group and a member of the Women’s Missionary Association. Norma’s deep Christian spirit shone through brightly to everyone that knew her and her brother, Noel. Norma spent the last 30 years of her life providing excellent care at home for Noel. She never considered taking care of her younger brother a “chore”. She provided him with the best possible care anyone could receive. She never made a single decision without first taking into account how it would affect Noel or her ability to care for him. She gave up many personal freedoms to stay home with him, but Norma never considered anything to be a sacrifice when it came to Noel. Everything that she did for him, she did with a willing and loving heart. Norma was preceded in death by her parents, Noel S. Broadus and Ethel M. Broadus; her sister, Caroline M. Broadus Lynch; her brother, Noel A. Broadus; and her niece, Kimberly S. Lynch. Norma is survived by her niece, Jennifer A. Verbois, of Gulfport, MS. She will be remembered and missed by her first cousin and lifelong best friend, Mary Lois Bond of Perkinston, MS, many second cousins, and her loving church family at Temple Baptist Church in Biloxi, MS. The family would like to thank Dr. Stephen Baker for the extraordinary amount of time he invested in Norma’s care, his expedition of her transfer to Ochsner Medical Center, and his open and honest communication with the family. A very special thank you also goes to Kitty Swetman, who Norma considered her friend as well as “her nurse”. Services will be held at Temple Baptist Church at 1860 Popps Ferry Road in Biloxi on Saturday, May 19, 2018 at 10 am. Friends may visit one hour prior at 9 am. Interment will follow at Blackwell Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions to Temple Baptist Church in Biloxi would be greatly appreciated. Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport is in charge of arrangements. View and sign register book at www.bradfordokeefe.com
