Oscar Wingfield Beck

Oscar Wingfield Beck joined God in Heaven on Friday, September 30, 2016. Oscar was born on September 3, 1938 in Jackson, MS where he lived until 1959. His mother, Josephine, and his father, Ross, had three boys that were always up to mischief. Oscar, the middle boy, loved a good prank and to fish. Oscar graduated from Central High School in Jackson, MS. He was great in math and science and went to Mississippi State University where he obtained a degree in mechanical engineering. The only thing that matched his love of MSU was the love of his life, Jeane Gullete Beck. The two grew up on the same street and were friends since the age of 11. This love relationship grew into a marriage of 58 years. Oscar’s work took them across the country to Seattle, Virginia, New Orleans, Mobile, Birmingham, and to Ocean Springs, MS where they spent the next 37 years. Oscar worked 20 years at Singing River Hospital in Information Systems. They raised four children Berkeley, Brent, Brannan, and Bethany in this wonderful community. Oscar was long time member of First Baptist Church of Ocean Springs, and he gave himself selflessly to serve others. He was a devout Christian before all else and truly loved people. He served as a Deacon as well as a youth Sunday School teacher for many years. Those who knew him, knew that he never met a stranger and strived to make others smile. Oscar was drawn to and loved children of all ages. He was known as the “baby whisperer” of First Baptist Church and was the main “baby rocker and singer” for all the grandchildren. At Ocean Springs sporting events, he was loudest fan screaming “defense” at the expense of the people around him. He never missed a grandchild’s event and was always cheering the loudest. Oscar actually had a fifth child named Maggie, a Cairn Terrier, that his cardiologist, Dr. Evie Magiros, gave him as a gift to keep him active after heart surgery. He walked Maggie religiously 2-3 times daily while talking MSU football to his son Brent or brother David. Everyone in the neighborhood knew and loved Oscar and Maggie. Over the years, Dr. Louis Rubenstein and Dr. Evie Magiros, fabulous doctors and devoted friends, took great care of Oscar, allowing him to survive a stroke and major heart surgery without missing a beat. Oscar was preceded in death by his parents, Ross H. Beck and Josephine C. Beck and his older brother Ross Beck, Jr. Oscar was survived by his wife, Jeane Gullete Beck, and his children Daughter Berkeley Knebel (David) from Vancleave, MS; his son Brent Beck (Jennie) of Ft. Collins, Colorado, daughters Brannan Glass (Robert) and Bethany Dill (Michael) both of Ocean Springs. He was also survived by his younger brother David Beck (Pamela) of Braxton, MS. Survived by 9 grandchildren including: Madison, Peyton, Kirsten, Mollie, Sue, Anna Grace, Jane Alice, Lilah Kate, and Maggie. A Memorial Service will be held at the First Baptist Church of Ocean Springs on Tuesday, October 4, 2016 at 6:30 pm. Friends may visit from 4:00 pm until service time. The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
