Peggy Joy McTaggart Stewart

Peggy Stewart passed away on June 25, 2013 with her family by her side. She was a long time resident of Ocean Springs. Peggy was born on Grand Cayman Island, British West Indies, October 15, 1927, to the late Innis Ashton McTaggart, a shipbuilder, and Doris Cooper McTaggart of Roatan, Honduras. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, Robert ‘Bob’ A. Stewart, daughters Lenna Davis (Bill), Doris Sherman (Bill), Shawn Williams (Roger), and son Jeff Stewart (Lindy) all of Ocean Springs; grandchildren, Jeannie Caillouet (Jody), Mike Davis (Robin Worner), Laura Michelle Davis, Renae Codella (Mondo), Todd Sherman (Emily), Tim Sherman (Kristine), Adam Sherman, Robbie Stewart (Brandy Brown), Jeffrey Stewart (Cristal), Zachary Stewart, Felicia Stewart, Emily Williams, and Katie Williams; and great grandchildren, Tre`, Kai, and Angie Caillouet, Gabe Davis, Richard Figueroa, AJ Codella and the anyday expected arrival of his sister Matilda Codella, Lucas and Liam Sherman, Alex Sherman, Jarrett Sherman, Aerwyn and Aiden Stewart, and Gavin and Elizabeth Stewart. She is also survived by her sisters Mary Dodds, Nettie Bodden (Claude), June Verhoeven, Ella Commissiong (Paul), and brothers, Bill McTaggart (Debbie) and Gary McTaggart (Ann), and her sister-in-law Gerry Nickoloff. Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, her daughter Laura Marie Stewart, her brother Innis ‘Mac’ McTaggart, her sisters Natalie McTaggart and Doris Thompson, her brothers-in-law ‘Red’ Dodds and ‘Bob’ Verhoeven, and granddaughter-in-law, Crystal Ryan Davis. Peggy had an adventurous life. She was visiting with her sister Mary in Jamaica in 1948 where she met her ‘ever lovin super daddy’ Bob Stewart at a bowling alley while he was stationed there. It was love at first sight. He was in the military and back in those days troops had to get permission to marry and permission was denied because he didn’t make enough money to support a wife. Bob persevered contacting a Congressman/cousin who had some influence and permission was finally granted. Peggy and Bob were married in Georgetown, Grand Cayman, on March 12, 1950. Our little island girl, who hadn’t even seen a traffic light, was now married to a military man and their travels eventually led them to Japan and Italy, as well as a number of stateside bases, raising a family of five children along the way. Her greatest sorrow was the loss of her daughter, Laura. She missed her every day and told us, ‘She is the first thing I think of when I wake up and my last thought at night!” Even though Ocean Springs is home, she loved Cayman and the Caribbean Sea. She would swim every day if she could when back on the Island. One of her great joys was being with her many siblings. They all became kids again when they were together. She loved happy music and singing, especially her Cayman songs and ditties she sang for her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved singing with her sisters and brothers, and particularly loved a duet “I don’t want to play in your yard” song that she sang with her sisters. She almost always fell out laughing before the song was finished. She could play almost any instrument by ear, piano, guitar, harmonica, etc. One of the most important things we learned from Mom is that no matter how far away you lived from family or how long it had been since you had seen them or how different you were, you stayed close to your family. Family is our rock. We have strived to pass this on to our children and grandchildren. She loved well, was well loved, and will be well missed!! Funeral services will be held at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home on Sunday, June 30, 2013 at 12:30 p.m. Friends may visit from 11:30 a.m. until service time. Interment will follow at D’Iberville Memorial Park.
