Penny Everett, age 82, of Ocean Springs, MS, passed away on Tuesday, March 27, 2012. Penny was born in Mount Pleasant, Alabama. She was a graduate of Providence Hospital School of Nursing. She began her nursing career in 1951. She was Director of Nursing at Singing River Hospital in Pascagoula and other hospitals in the South East. She was appointed to the Mississippi State Board of Nursing in 1983 by Governor William Winter. She served as both secretary and president of the board until 1990. In 1989 she was presented the highest honor a nurse can receive, Nurse of the Year for the State of Mississippi. Nurses that worked under her described her as kind, strict, professional and said that she always put patient care first. Many heard her say, “Right will prevail!”She was a member of the Poarch Creek Indian Tribe as well as a member of First Baptist Church of Vancleave, MS, where she was in Mrs. Edna Brady’s Sunday school class. She will be missed by her friends and family, and especially by her beloved grandchildren, Heather, Matthew, Allison and Brittany Everett and great grandchildren, Hallie Grace, Brock, Cale, Ella and Leila. Her unselfish, loving and sweet spirit was an example of how all people should strive to live.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Albert Everett, Jr.; her parents, Agnes Donnia Brantley Taylor and James Terry Taylor, Sr., a sister, Nanny Sue Phillips and a brother, James Terry Taylor, Jr.
Survivors include her sons, David James Everett (Jackie), Albert Matthew Everett, Sr. (Kim) and Christopher Jon Everett (Diane), six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, her beloved sister, Nioma Elizabeth Taylor Stewart and brother in law, JB Stewart, 13 nieces and nephews and many cherished friends.
Visitation will be held on Sunday, April 1, 2012 from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Vancleave Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home.
Funeral services will be on Monday, April 2, 2012 at 12:00 p.m. at First Baptist Church of Vancleave. Interment will follow in Biloxi National Cemetery.
Pall Bearers will be: Kevin Schisler, Jonathan Rackard, Nathaniel Hernandez, Greg Rigdon, William F. Walker, Jr. and Dalton Ryan Walker. Honorary Pall Bearers are: Mike Gaffney, Noah Lee, Tyler Hernandez, Beau Hommel, John Harrison, Eugene Rackard and Benjamin Paul Lee.
