Peter "Pete" Martin Johanson

Peter “Pete” Martin Johanson, Sr. died Friday, February 28, 2014 in D’Iberville. Born December 8, 1927, Mr. Johanson was the son of Eric Siegfried Johanson and Caroline Lechner Johanson. Born and raised in Biloxi, he moved to D’Iberville in 2007. Mr. Johanson was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Nancy Ann Johanson, granddaughter Amber Anderson Meyer, brothers William and Eric Johanson, and sisters Hilda Johanson Wade, Eunice Johanson, and Libby Johanson Cole. Survivors include his beloved wife of 60 years, Yvonne Blanchard Johanson, daughters Karen Johanson Barnes (Franz) of Clinton and Debra Johanson Anderson (Lee Carron) of Biloxi, and son Pete Johanson, Jr. (Sharon) of Jacksonville, AR; grandchildren Jeff Patterson (Shianne), Carlton Anderson (Melanie), Maria Hamilton, Meghan Johanson Martin (Jon), and Kiersten Johanson; and great-grandchildren Kaitlyn, Karyssa and Landon Hamilton. He was also the favorite “Uncle Pete” to many special nephews and nieces. Mr. Johanson was a devout Catholic, a former member of St. Michael’s and later St. Louis in Biloxi, and most recently St. Mary’s Parish in Woolmarket. He attended St. Michael’s Elementary School, and graduated from Biloxi High. Pete served in the U.S Coast Guard under the authority of the U.S Navy, and was a World War II veteran. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service as a letter carrier in East Biloxi for many years, and later procured a rural route in North Biloxi. His postal customers were always greeted by his easy smile and friendly wave. In younger days, Pete enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, and horseshoes, but his lifelong passion was his family. An avid Saints fan, he passed that legacy to his son and grandsons. His kind and gentle spirit was an inspiration to all who knew and loved him. The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to those who helped take care of Pete over the past several years: the nurses, therapists and aides at Amedisys Home Health; Erica and her helpers of Settlers’ Cove; and Liz, Teadra, Patricia and crew with Southern Care Hospice. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Addy’s Angels, 1129 Lori Dr., Slidell, LA 70461, or to St. Mary Catholic Church Building Fund, 8343 Woolmarket Rd., Biloxi, MS 39532. A funeral liturgy will be celebrated at the Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Biloxi on Monday, March 3, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. Friends may visit from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m. Burial will follow at Biloxi City Cemetery.
