Philip I. "Phil" Harvey

Philip Irwin Harvey, 70, of Ocean Springs, MS passed away after a 10 year struggle with cancer. Phil lost his brave and courageously fought battle on August 19, 2012 in Ocean Springs. His family mourns his passing but is thankful for the peace he now has. He was such a blessing to his family and friends. Phil was born in Biloxi, MS on December 26, 1941 and moved to Ocean Springs in 1964. He was a graduate of Biloxi High School, Class of 1959. He attended Perkinston Junior College and USM, Gulf Coast. Phil was employed with Frank P. Corso from 1960 to 1968. He joined State Farm Insurance Co. becoming an agent in 1969 which spanned a career of 43 years. Phil was a member of the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer in Biloxi having served as a member of the vestry. He was also a member of many local organizations including, McLeod Lodge F&AM #424, Scottish Rite Bodies & Joppa Shrine Temple, past member and president of the Ocean Springs Jaycees and a past member of Gulf Coast Carnival Association serving as a Duke in 1980. Phil also served as an Alderman for the City of Ocean Springs from 1985 until 1993. Some of Phil’s happiest days were spent on his boat “The Lady Ann” with his family and friends. Phil is preceded in death by his parents, Louis W. and Mary L. Harvey; brothers, Louis William and Kenneth; in-laws, Norman and Mildred Gunderson. He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Ann Gunderson Harvey; three children, Philip I. Harvey, Jr. (Michell), Elizabeth Ann “Beth” Joachim (Craig) and David M. Harvey (Jennifer); six grandchildren, Megan Harvey, Morgan Joachim, Connor Joachim, Adelle Harvey, Emmy Harvey and Sutton Harvey; niece and nephew, Virginia and Ned Harvey. Special thanks to his devoted staff, Sharron, Tina, Aimee and Starlette and to his entire State Farm family. Also to his very special friends, Rick and Sharron Kestner, as well as, his special caregivers, Bobbie, Darrell, Gloria and Barbara. The family request that memorials be made to: The Episcopal Church of the Redeemer Building Fund, 1904 Popps Ferry Rd., Biloxi, MS 39532. Funeral services will be on Wednesday, August 22, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. at the Episcopal Church of the Redeemer. Friends may visit from 1:00 p.m. until service time. Interment will follow in Southern Memorial Park. Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, Ocean Springs is in charge arrangements.
