Robert "Bob" Clisby

Robert “Bob” Clisby was born in Lennox, South Dakota on January 15, 1934 to Mary Bethel and Robert Clisby, Sr. Sadly, he left us on February 28, 2015 with a lifetime of joyous memories and a massive amount of cigars. Bob joined the Navy in 1952 and served four years during the Korean War. During that time, he was a ‘Frogman’, a precursor to the Navy SEALS. He was an Underwater Demolition Team (UDT) member and truly enjoyed his explosive time in the service. “The Navy made a man out of me,” Bob said. While stationed in Long Beach, California, Bob met and eventually married Iva Mae Paton from Neche, North Dakota on January 24, 1957 in Bellflower, California. Together, they raised two amazing children, Robert Edward Clisby III, and Heather Ann Clisby, in Long Beach. The family took advantage of their Southern California locale by playing in the desert, the mountains and the seaside. The Clisbys’ also enjoyed many cross-country trips together in The Voyager with their loyal dog, Frisky. Later, Bob moved to Pacific Northwest and lived in Lincoln City, Oregon and Tacoma and Redmond, Washington. During this time, he met and married Shirley Moore on August 1, 1993. Together, Bob and Shirley traveled the country in their motorhome, exploring the United States and making many friends along the way. In 2006, Bob moved to Gulfport and eventually settled in Ocean Springs, Mississippi to be closer to his family and also, because he truly loved the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He also loved smoking his cigars on the “Outback”, the shady porch behind the Samaritan House where he lived. He was a Sunday regular at The Waffle House (Hwy 90 in Biloxi) and a member of the Elks Lodge. Bob is survived by his wife, Shirley; his children, Robert and Heather; his sister, Mary Johannesen; his daughter-in-law, MaryAnn Clisby; stepdaughter, Julie Brain; nephews, Eric and Ryan Johannesen and a niece, Jenni Heidecker; and his grandson – the light of his life - Robert Moran Clisby. His parents and his step-daughter, Kathy Smith, preceded him in death. Bob Clisby was a joyous man wherever he was and never met a stranger in his life. He was one of a kind and will be sorely missed. In lieu of flowers, the family requests a donation to the Humane Society of South Mississippi, 2615 25th Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39501. A visitation will be held at Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home in Ocean Springs on Wednesday, March 4, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
