Sidney Wayne Howell

Sidney Wayne Howell, age 62, of Ocean Springs, MS passed away at home on July 11, 2012 with his wife at his side. He lived his life with joy, faith, gratitude, and generosity. Mr. Howell spent his 27-year accounting career at Blossman Gas in Ocean Springs, beginning his employment there as a teenager and retiring as head of the Accounting Department. He considered them his Blossman Gas Family. Upon graduation from Ocean Springs High School, Mr. Howell earned the OSHS “Good Citizenship Award,” pointing to his future involvement in the community. He served as an officer and active member in many organizations to benefit the people of Ocean Springs including the Rotary Club, Ocean Springs Chamber of Commerce, HOSA, and Gulf Hills Homeowner's Association. Mr. Howell was deeply committed to his church, St. Paul United Methodist Church, serving on the board and as a member of the United Methodist Men. He was also active in South Mississippi Cursillo. An alumnus of Mississippi State University, Mr. Howell enjoyed following MSU Athletics and cheering on the Bulldogs. He also enjoyed sailing Gulf and Caribbean waters and traveling with his wife, Kay. Mr. Howell treasured time with his friends, hosting a weekly game night with his three closest friends for over 30 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Tressie Howell, his sister, Linda Martin, and his niece, Tracy Martin Pope. Survivors include his wife, Kay Bryan Howell, his sister and brother-in-law Patti and Ron Page of Lucedale, and his father and his wife, Louise and Houston Howell of Ackerman. He is also survived by three stepsons and their families: Angie and Jason Trochessett of Naples, Fla., Jami and Bryan Trochessett of Tallahassee, Fla., and Paul Trochessett of Ocean Springs. Mr. Howell was known as “PawPaw Sidney” to seven grandchildren: Sarah and Noah Trochessett of Naples; Camille, Jack, Katie Wren and Will Trochessett of Tallahassee; and Tristan Trochessett of Ocean Springs. Mrs. Howell would like to express her heartfelt appreciation to his dedicated caregiver, Jan, and to Camellia Hospice for their years of service to the family. Visitation and a memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 15, 2012, at St. Paul United Methodist Church at 800 Porter Avenue in Ocean Springs. Visitation is scheduled for 2 p.m. with the service beginning at 4 p.m. A graveside service will follow immediately at Evergreen Cemetery. Arrangements are being handled by the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford O'Keefe Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers the family prefers donations be made in Mr. Howell's memory to the National Ataxia Foundation, 2600 Fernbrook Lane, Suite 119, Minneapolis, MN, 55447, or to St. Paul United Methodist Church-Missions, 800 Porter Avenue, Ocean Springs, MS, 39564.
