Stanhope Felix Hopkins passed away Monday, April 17, 2017, peacefully at his home in Pass Christian, MS. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 70 years, Ann Blanche Springer Hopkins. They raised four (4) children, Stanhope Felix Hopkins, Jr. (Sheryl), Martha Vance Hopkins Feldman (Richard), Peter Hyde Hopkins (Jean), and Marian Gayle Hopkins Verlander (Kenneth). They have five (5) grandchildren; Stanhope Hopkins III (Christina), Peter Hopkins, Jr. (Beth), Adam Hopkins (Laura), Kenneth Verlander, Jr. (Trisha), and Hilah Verlander Newman (James); and nine (9) great grandchildren. His parents were Marian Gayle Denegre Hopkins and Dr. Ralph Hopkins. He was also preceded in death by his brothers and sisters Ralph Hopkins, Jr., Marigayle Hopkins Hart, Mina Hopkins Dart, George Hopkins, and Mary McNeil Hopkins Gilly. His brother, George, is survived by his loving wife Gloria. Stanhope spent many days in his early years on the gulf coast at his family home in Biloxi where he engaged in his lifelong love of sailing and met the love of his life and future wife, Ann Springer. He attended New Orleans Academy and Tulane University, where he was a member of the Kappa Alpha Order, before his studies were interrupted by his service in the Army Air Corps during World War II. He served as a fighter pilot and flew P-51 Mustangs and P-47 Thunderbolts in France and Germany. After the war, he completed his education at Tulane University and married Ann on January 10, 1946. Afterwards he worked for Canal Barge Company for 19 years serving as VP of Repairs and Construction and was a member of the Board of Directors. He worked the rest of his career as an independent Marine Surveyor traveling up and down the Mississippi River, along the gulf coast and as far away as Russia, the Philippines, and Paraguay. He was a member of the Southern Yacht Club, Pass Christian Yacht Club, The Louisiana Club, The Boston Club, the Stratford Club, The Propeller Club, and several other carnival and professional organizations. The family will be receiving at 4:30 pm on Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at his home. Relatives and friends are also invited to a reception to be held in New Orleans at the home of his son, Peter Hopkins, at 4:30 pm on Monday, May 8, 2017.
