Stephen G. Sekul

Stephen G. Sekul (“Maroono”) was born December 31, 1954 in Biloxi, Mississippi to George “Rushie” Sekul and Agnes Semski Sekul. He passed away on October 3, 2013 at the age of 58 in Ocean Springs surrounded by his loving family. Stevie grew upon on Point Cadet in Biloxi, and attended St. Michael’s Catholic Elementary School. He graduated from Biloxi High School where he played football. Stevie was a life long resident of Biloxi, and he lived in the family home until Hurricane Katrina. He then relocated to Ocean Springs, however, he always considered himself a “Biloxian”. Stevie was an avid musician, and followed his dreams to play music. He became well known for the different types of instruments he played, the various types of music, and the different places he played all over from the Gulf Coast, to Memphis, and Nashville. He recorded several discs of cover songs, and original songs for his numerous friends and family. His love of music, especially the Beatles and Blues, was very evident in everything he did. Stevie instilled his love of music in his son, Geoffrey, and taught Geoffrey at a young age to play the Beatles’ “Let it Be”. Stevie is preceded in death by his parents, George and Agnes Sekul. He is survived by his son, Geoffrey Joseph Salter Sekul; his brothers, George (Lynn) Sekul of Biloxi, Thomas J. Sekul of Ocean Springs, Morris G. (Susan) Sekul of Biloxi; his sisters, Carolyn (Douglas) Sekul Mooney of Vancouver, Washington, Bettye (Michael) Sekul Dennery of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. The family would like to give special thanks to Matthew F. Kuluz, M.D., Helen Cooper, Gary Geno, and Joe Mitchell and other special friends who made his last days joyous, laughter filled, and easy. Thanks to Father Farrell and Father Greg Barras for their many prayers and guidance during his year long battle. Another special thank you to Glenda, and the Hospice of Light care givers, and the Singing River Hospital Staff, especially The Radiology Department. A celebration of life will be held at St. Michael Catholic Church on Wednesday, October 9, 2013. Friends and family may visit from 10:00 a.m. until Noon with Mass of Christian Burial immediately following. Internment at Southern Memorial will be privately held by the family at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family prefers memorials to the St. Michael Shrine Fund. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
