Avery B. (Bill) Cummings

Avery B. (Bill) Cummings, 93, of the Latimer Community passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 24, 2018. Mr. Cummings was born in Logan County, Nebraska on October 8, 1924. He joined the Army at the age 17 during the outbreak of World War ll and continued his military service with the Air Force during the Korea conflict. He finally retired from the Air Force after twenty years at the rank of Master Sergeant. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ila Leo Cummings, parents Henry and Ruby Cummings and his brother Stanley Cummings. He and Ila married in 1951 and they were married for 61 years. They met while he was stationed at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi. Their marriage produced three children, Stanley Orrell (Butch) Cummings (Betty), Henry Elwood (Hank) Cummings (Donna), and Suzanne Marie (Suzy) Humphrey (Kenneth). He is also survived by his sister, Willa Carlton (Darrell) of Hot Springs, Arkansas; his three children and five grandchildren Avery James Cummings (Lucy), Morgan Lee Markos (Adam), Stanley Kyle Cummings (Victoria), Amy Marie Gibson (John), and Ethan Louis Humphrey (Gabriela); two great-grandchildren Wyatt and Rowan Gibson; and two step great-grandchildren, Lyla and Zain. Mr. Cummings traveled all over the world in the military, oil exploration business, and during his employment on America’s inland waterways. During the latter years of his wife’s life, Mr. Cummings provided devoted and exceptional care to her during her battle with Alzheimer’s. He never left her side until the end. Mr. Cummings enjoyed fishing and working outside. He was famous for being able to fix anything using either duct tape or a little “dope.” Visitation will be held Wednesday, June 27, 2018 from 10:30 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., with a service at 11:30 a.m., all at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home. Private interment will be held at a later date. The Cummings family would like to express their sincere gratitude to his wonderful caregivers Veronica, Maya, Frankie, Wanda, Clem, Barbara, and Betty. Memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, TN.
