Calvin “Ricky” Flake, age 61, of Biloxi, MS, passed away on August 31, 2018 after a lifetime battle with diabetes and leukemia.
Ricky was born on March 8, 1957 in Vardaman, MS. Beloved by his parents Horace Calvin Flake and Lilly Pearl White Flake of Louisville, MS. Ricky was raised and educated in Biloxi. He received an Associate of Arts degree in 1979 from Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Gulfport, MS and a Bachelor of Science degree from The University of Southern Mississippi in 1981. Following both of his parents as educators, Ricky enjoyed teaching school and held positions in Silver Spring, MD and Biloxi, MS.
Ricky was known mostly for his passion as a musician and love of music. He served as the drummer in Simple Sister from 1973-1974, Shorty George from 1975-1976, Slash from 1977-1978, Vigilanti from 1980-1981, The Cheaters from 1981-1985, Steve Dunkin Group from 1990-1992, The Ultrabeats from 1993-1995, Conspirasea from 1997-2004, The Commandos from 2007-2009, and The Deacons from 2004– 2010. Following his career as a musician, Ricky wrote a column for The Sun Herald which allowed him to continue to enjoy his love of music through exploring the art through critiquing peers in the industry.
Ricky was a “free spirit” and enjoyed entertaining others. He loved God, his family, and his many friends. He was a kid at heart who captured the love of those around him with his great sense of humor. He was a natural story-teller and avid writer who openly shared his inner perspective.
He is survived by a host of extended family and friends.
