Carl Elizabeth “Betty” Neville was born on July 6, 1936 in Anniston, Alabama and was received into glory on December 8, 2018. Betty‘s father was an Army officer so she grew up on military bases in the southeast. Betty attended the all girls Tubman high school in Augusta, Georgia and graduated in May, 1953. Following graduation, she moved to Washington DC with her mother, Frances Lee, where she met and married her husband, Adolphus Hugh Gibson, on October 30, 1954. Following their wedding, Betty and Hoot moved to England where Hoot was deployed with the US Army Corp of Engineers. After a 2 year assignment, Betty and Hoot returned to the states and settled in Birmingham, Alabama. Hoot went to work as an engineer for Southern Company and Betty was a stay at home wife and eventually a mother when they had their first child in 1959 and the second in 1961. Betty and Hoot were charter members of Briarwood Presbyterian Church where Betty sang in the choir and helped out with the office tasks as needed. Betty was an excellent pianist, had a beautiful, professionally trained voice and would sing solos in church, at weddings and other events. Betty was an excellent cook and loved entertaining. She and Hoot regularly hosted bible studies, dinner parties and bridge parties. Betty was a lifelong helpmate and support to her husband and took pride in living a Godly life, maintaining her household and raising their children in a Christian home. Hoot said they were a “team, actually a good team.” Betty is preceded in death by her husband of 64 years, Adolphus Hugh (Hoot) Gibson, who passed away on November 30, 2018. Betty is survived by two daughters; Elizabeth Allison (Randy) Griffin and Diane Faith (Bill) Williston. She is also survived by five grandchildren; Elizabeth Leigh (David) Saldarraiga, Rachel Diane Griffin, William C Williston, David Hugh Williston and Michael Williston and survived by four great grandchildren. A private service will be held in Ocean Springs, Mississippi. Memorial donations may be made to First Presbyterian Church of Gulfport, Mississippi. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
