Commander Charles “Charlie” Howard Munter, US Navy retired, passed away on January 7, 2021 at his home in Long Beach, Mississippi at the age of 71. Charles was the son of the late Howard and Elsie Munter. He was born on June 25, 1949 in Indianapolis, Indiana. Charlie is survived by his wife, Helen “Ann” Dauro Munter of Long Beach, MS; his former wife, Cheryl “Sheri” Powell Munter of Biloxi, MS; his two sons, Ted Munter of Fayetteville, NC and Dan Munter of Raleigh, NC; his three brother, David Munter of Chesapeake, VA, Andrew Munter of Raytown, MD, and Patrick Munter of Hillsboro, MO; one sister, Susan Burns of Lenexa, KS; three grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. In 1968, Charlie enlisted in the United States Navy as an Electronics Technician earning the rank of Chief Petty Officer before Commissioning as an Ensign in February 1978. During his 27-year career, he traveled the world aboard the Destroyer Escort, USS Bronstein; the Destroyer; USS John Hancock; the Battleship, USS Iowa; and the Aircraft Carrier, USS Forrestal. A decorated officer, Charlie was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Commendation Medals, the Navy Achievement Medal, Joint Meritorious Unit Ward, Navy Unit Commendation, Meritorious Unit Commendations, Navy “E” Awards, Good Conduct Medals, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals, Southwest Asia Medal, Humanitarian Service Medal and Sea Service Deployment Ribbons. Charlie retired in 1995 as a Commander stationed at the Service School Command in Orlando, Florida. Of his many accomplishments in the Navy, Charlie was most proud of the fact he was a “Mustang”. A private family ceremony will be held with full Military Honors at the Biloxi National Cemetery, Biloxi, MS on Monday, January 11, 2021 at 9:00 AM. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street in Gulfport, is honored to serve the Munter family.
