Douglas and Edith Young

We wish to share the recent passing of Douglas Arnold Young, 83, and Edith Gloria Young, 86, longtime residents of the Gulf Coast of Mississippi. They both died peacefully after sharing a lifetime of beautiful memories together, including their daughter Marisa. Originally from Mexico City, Edith emigrated to the United States in 1964 where she met and fell in love with Doug. They married on February 12, 1966. Edith will be remembered for her impressive artistic abilities and beautiful artwork she created, even in the later stages of her life. Doug was known for being quick witted and clever. He was also a devoted husband to Edith and father to Marisa, who needed long term care before she passed in 2016. Like Doug’s great-great-grandparents, John and Margarette Eberlein, who died two months and fourteen days apart, Doug and Edith were apart only four months and one day. He passed on Thursday, March 4, 2021, and Edith soon followed on Monday, July 5, 2021. As it was written in Margarette’s obituary and so fitting for Doug and Edith, “Their death was like the ripening and falling of the Autumn fruit.” Doug was son of the late K.C. and Bessie (Bumpers) Young. Doug was born in Crosby, MS, on February 13, 1938, and was a twin to Beverly Antoinette, who died at age one. He was a member of the United States Navy from September 13, 1957, until September 11, 1961, proudly serving aboard the U.S.S. O’Brien. He was a machinist by trade, working in New Orleans and on the Gulf Coast. Doug was an avid sports fan and could talk for hours about any Mississippi team. He was the beloved brother of Kay (Tini) Young, of Mechanicsville, VA, and Rodney (and the late Ann) Young, of West Point, GA, Sue (Craig) Dowling, of Pine Mountain, GA, and the late Don (Cookie) Young. He will be remembered by his many nieces and nephews. Edith was the daughter of the late Alejandro and Isabel (Shields) Silva. Edith was born in Mexico City, Mexico, on October 21, 1934. She moved to the United States in 1964 and worked at the Mexican Consulate in New Orleans, LA, where she and Doug met. She proudly became a United States citizen on October 4, 1971. Edith was an artist by trade. Her art was displayed in Mexico City and across the Gulf Coast. Edith is cherished by her only sister, Nelly (and the late Salvador) Sanchez, of Mexico, and her niece and nephew. A memorial will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2021, at the Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, Howard Avenue in Biloxi, MS. Visitation will begin at 10 am with the service following at 11 am. Interment will follow at Biloxi City Cemetery. Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is honored to serve the Young family.
