Dr. George Robert (Bob) Robinson of Gulfport, Mississippi, died Friday, January 29, 2021, at Gulfport Memorial Hospital. Born on February 25, 1942, Dr. Robinson was preceded in death by his parents, Dr. Thomas Robinson and Euzede Robinson and by his brother, Dr. Tom Robinson. At the age of fifteen, Dr. Robinson graduated from Drew High School in Drew, Mississippi. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in both Chemistry and Physics from Millsaps College, where he was a member of Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity, and a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy from the University of Mississippi. He earned a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Mississippi School of Medicine and was subsequently a Resident in Medicine and a Fellow in Gastroenterology. Dr. Robinson was the first gastroenterologist on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He was on staff at Gulfport Memorial Hospital for twenty-five years, serving as Chief of Staff and on many boards and committees. He was a member of the Mississippi Medical Association and Coastal Medical. A lifelong sailor, Dr. Robinson enjoyed racing his sailboat Destiny. He won awards racing to Mexico, Key West, and Jamaica as well as in Gulf Yachting Association races. Upon retiring from medicine, he and his wife Elizabeth spent two and a half years navigating America's Great Loop on Slowdance, their cruising boat. They traveled north along the Atlantic Coast, through New York, into Canada and the Great Lakes, and then south along the Mississippi River. Dr. Robinson also enjoyed woodworking and boat-building. He attended several workshops at The Wooden Boat School in Maine. A loving husband, father, and grandfather, Dr. Robinson will be remembered for his gentle and caring demeanor. He enjoyed watching football and was a long-standing member of the Gulfport Yacht Club. He also was an ordained Elder of Westminster Presbyterian Church. Dr. Robinson is survived by his wife of twenty-nine years, Elizabeth Baker Robinson, and by four children: Catherine Winborne (Don); Michele Lincoln (Rob); Bobby Robinson (Brandi); and Jenny Long (Damian). He is also survived by eleven grandchildren and one great-grandchild as well as his sister-in-law Sally Robinson. A celebration of his life will be held at a later date. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, memorials be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 5005 Lawson Avenue, Gulfport, MS 39507, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
