Gilberto Patino

Dr. Gilberto Patiño passed away on July 6, 2019. Dr. Patiño was born in San Gil, Colombia, South America. He was a long-time resident of Leakesville, MS, a community in which he worked for over 35 years and loved dearly. He was living in Ocean Springs, MS at the time of his death. Dr. Patiño received his Doctor of Medicine degree from the Facultad de Medicina in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He immigrated to the United States in the early 1960’s and worked as a physician at Matty Hersee Hospital in Meridian, MS for 5 years before moving to Leakesville, MS. He worked at Greene County Hospital in Leakesville, MS and State Line Medical Clinic in State Line, MS for over 35 years providing care to over 3 generations of Greene County residents. When not practicing medicine, Dr. Patiño loved woodworking (an art he learned from his father), painting, and fishing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Saul Patiño and Axelinta Patiño as well as two sisters, Beatriz Patiño and Cecilia Moreno (Alvaro). He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Nydia Patiño; his children, Dr. Gilberto “Bert” Patiño and his wife Theresa Patiño, Dr. Gregory Patiño and his wife Andrea Patiño; and his grandchildren, Emilia Patiño, Ana Patiño, Gabriela Patiño, Laura Patiño, Dominic Patiño, Isabella Patiño, and Alexandrea Patiño, all from Ocean Springs, MS. He is also survived by his brother, Dr. Carlos Patiño (Leonor) of Jackson, MS and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Ocean Springs (502 Jackson Ave, Ocean Springs, MS 39564) on Saturday July 13th from 10:30-11:30 a.m. A funeral mass will directly follow the visitation beginning at 11:30 am on Saturday July 13th. The Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that individuals consider making a memorial donation to a scholarship fund for students living in Greene County who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine.
