Joseph “Joe” Paul Mowery, 56, of Long Beach, Mississippi, passed away on Wednesday, May 13, 2020 in Gulfport, MS. Joe was born on September 14, 1963 in Amherst, Ohio and was a longtime resident of Michigan but recently moved from Midland, MI to Long Beach, MS. He attended Bruceton Mills High School in Bruceton, West Virginia after which he began 16 years of honorable military service in the United States Navy; 12 active, and 4 reserved years. Joe Served on the USS Sampson DDG-10 in the Persian Gulf War and the USS Austin LPD-4 in Desert Storm. While serving his country, Joe received commendations for Good Conduct (2), Navy Battle “E” Award, Joint Meritorious Unit Service, Southwest Asia & Overseas Service (3), National Defense, and Armed Forces & Navy Expeditionary Medal (2). After Joe’s retirement from the USN, he began working for The City of Troy, Michigan’s DPW as a heavy equipment operator. He was a proud member of Knights of Columbus and AFSME Local 574. When not working, Joe was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, hiking with his family, and teaching his grandsons how to shoot. Joe loved telling stories of his military service and reconnecting with those he served with. He loved his family very dearly and carried a giant heart filled with love. His sense of humor and his laugh were contagious. Joe loved to talk and have long conversations with anyone who would listen. He fought for those he worked with and always stood up for what was right. The love he had for his grandsons was unmatched by anyone. He will be deeply missed by so many. He was preceded in death by his father, James Mowery; and long-time spouse Karen Mowery. He is survived by his mother, Ruth Dixon; siblings Teresa (Paul) Rollin, Duane Mowery, Tony Williams, and Danny Williams; daughters Kristin (Randy) Marcell, Danielle Feeley (Lee Fanshier), and Dana (Barret) Hotz; his “puzzle piece”, Joyce Sloan; beloved dog, Casey; and many nieces and nephews. Services are to be determined and will be with full military honors. We would like to also extend our deepest gratitude to Dr. S. Jalal, Cardiologist, and the entire amazing and caring ICU staff at Memorial Hospital in Gulfport, Mississippi for their care and compassion who truly went above and beyond for Joe and our family.
