Lisa Thompson Segarra

Lisa Thompson Segarra, age 60, of Ocean Springs, died on Sunday, February 25, 2018, following a courageous battle with cancer. She will be remembered for her generosity of spirit, ease of laughter, kindness to animals, and grace. Lisa, originally from Squantum, Massachusetts, was a resident of Ocean Springs since 1989. Born in Quincy, MA on December 29, 1957, she was a graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Hingham, MA, and earned a BS in Nutrition in 1980 from Simmons College in Boston, MA. She later obtained an MPH degree from the University of Houston in 1988. She was licensed and practiced as a Registered Dietician up to the time of her death. Lisa ran one of the local WIC (Women, Infants, & Children) offices for several years, and worked on MRE improvement projects. Not shy of the limelight, she appeared on local television several times as a guest nutritionist on a morning lifestyle program. Multi-talented with diverse interests, Lisa ran a daycare center in San Antonio in the 1980’s, ‘Camp Segarra.’ Filling an emergency need, she taught third year French for a term at the local high school, quite a feat for one with no formal training. Lisa was a Master Gardener, and raised bees in Ocean Springs under the name “Golden Girl Farms." Her love of coastal living was reflected through her hobbies of scuba diving, kayaking, sailing, and her near-daily walks over the Biloxi-Ocean Springs Bridge. She was a promising amateur painter and past president of the Ocean Springs Art Association. Lisa, who maintained a strong and fiercely loyal commitment to family, exhibited an effortless kindness to both friends and stranger alike. She traveled over most of the world, including several medical missionary trips to Central America, where, along with her sister, Suzanne, she ran the field pharmacy. She also volunteered at the King’s Daughter's Thrift Store, along with several other “Firefly Ladies” over the past 12 years. Lisa is preceded in death by her parents, John Vincent Thompson and Louise Marguerite Will Thompson, and brother Robert Sean Thompson. Lisa was dearly loved and will be missed by her children, Katherine (Noah) and Jonathan (Christine); ex-husband, Jay T. Segarra; siblings, John Thompson (Debbie), Jeanne Thompson (Rosemary), Suzanne Y. Thompson (Francesco Insolia), and Christopher Thompson; 5 nephews; 2 nieces; and many loving friends, both local and world-wide. The loss of her indomitably vital, charismatic spirit will be felt by those of us left behind, even as we carry her memory forward within us. Christus AOMPS Defendit. Wake/Visitation following cremation will be held at the Ocean Springs Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home on Thursday, March 1, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Memorial Mass will be held at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church of Ocean Springs on Friday, March 2, 2018 at 4:30 p.m. (visitation one hour prior), with a reception to follow at 1202 Iola Drive in Ocean Springs. Flowers are welcome, but donations may be made in lieu of flowers to Pollinator Partnership at pollinator.org (supports bees and butterflies as essential to our ecosystem). The Segarra Family wishes to thank the caring medical staff of the Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, Ocean Springs Hospital, and Ocean Springs Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
