Melvin "Mickey" Howard Mercer, a resident of Biloxi, passed away on Saturday, November 3, 2018 at the age of 82. Mr. Mercer was born in Winona, Missouri on January 12, 1936 to Ernest "Blackie" H. and Bernice Mercer. He said he became a long-term resident of Biloxi once he saw the beaches of the Mississippi Sound. Upon high school graduation in 1954, Mr. Mercer joined the United States Air Force (USAF) and served for twenty-one years. He was awarded numerous Air Force Commendation Medals during his military career. After his retirement from the USAF he was employed as an instructor at Keesler Air Force Base for an additional twenty-eight years. Mr. Mercer proudly served the United States Government for forty-nine years. Mr. Mercer was an avid golfer, loved to play tricks on his friends, and was a New Orleans Saints fan. He was preceded in death by both of his parents; his daughter, Constance "Connie" Mercer; his granddaughter, Stephanie Mercer; and grandson, Jason Taylor. Mr. Mercer is survived by his loving wife of sixty years, Harrelyn "Tootie" M. Lowd, Mercer of Biloxi; his children, Deborah L. Taylor of Biloxi, David H. (Annette) Mercer of Georgia and Stephen H. Mercer of Ocean Springs; his grandchildren, Candace L. Taylor, Mikki L. Wesson, David Mercer, II, Dwayne (Kimberly) Mercer, Jessica (Anthony) Mercer-Lopez and Zachary Mercer; and numerous great-grandchildren. Mr. Mercer is also survived by a very close family friend, Meagan Novotny. A private, family service will be held at a later date. The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
