Nora Marie Ziz

On June 16, 2019, Nora Marie Ziz went home to Jesus, surrounded by her nine brothers and sisters. Nora was born on April 19, 1949, in Biloxi, to George Anthony Ziz, Sr. and Frances Norton Ziz. She touched many lives throughout her 70 years, including all of the students she taught and her family members and friends. Nora was a woman of strong faith, and during her life, she was a member of St. John (Blessed Seelos), Sacred Heart, and Nativity parishes. Nora was a beautiful lady in every sense of the word, and her classical sense of style and ladylike grace was displayed in her everyday life. Nora was a 1967 graduate of Sacred Heart Academy, in Biloxi. She then attended the University of Southern Mississippi, where she received a B.S. and Master’s Degree in Education. She taught at several schools, including: Popps Ferry Elementary, in Biloxi, a Department of Defense School in Bayreuth, Germany, St. Alphonsus Elementary in Ocean Springs, schools in Houston, Texas, and Pass Road Elementary, in Gulfport. She retired from the Gulfport School District in 2016. Teaching students was not her job, but her passion! She touched so many lives in her 44 years as a teacher. As a former coworker said, “She was so passionate about her students and went above and beyond to ensure their needs were met, even if it came out of her own pocket.” Nora loved gardening, reading, shopping, and spending time with her extended family and friends. She enjoyed going on road trips with her friends and loved all of the fun and laughs they had together. Nora was a firm believer in speaking her mind, and you always knew where you stood with her. She cared deeply for everyone in her family and always wanted the best for each of them. At Nativity Cathedral, Nora served as a Eucharistic Minister and a CCD teacher. She worked with the Altar Society and Cleaning Team, and she sang in the Cathedral Choir. She delivered Communion to sick in the hospital and delivered food to homebound with Martha’s Meals at Loaves and Fishes. Nora is preceded in death by her parents, George A. Ziz, Sr. and Frances Norton Ziz, her sister, Mary Frances Ziz, infant brother, Michael W. Ziz, and infant niece and nephew, Sadie and Daniel. She leaves behind to cherish her memories, her siblings, George A. Ziz, Jr. (Barbara), Della Ziz Fayard (David), Jeffrey D. Ziz (Lisa), Theresa Ziz Whiteside (Chuck), Joseph F. Ziz (Patti), Laura Ziz Landry, William V. Ziz, Catherine Ziz Fountain (Craig), and Constance M. Ziz. She is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and great nieces and nephews, whom she adored. She also leaves behind a very special cousin, Cheryl Dronet Gruich, and many close friends. Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 20, from 11:00 a.m - 1:00 p.m, followed by a Funeral Mass at 1:00 p.m., all at Nativity BVM Cathedral. Interment will follow at Biloxi City Cemetery. The family wishes to extend a special thank you for the care given to our sister by the doctors and nursing staff at Ochsner’s and Ocean Springs Hospitals. Nora was a true Southern lady who will be greatly missed, and when she knew things were out of her hands, she often said, “Whatcha gonna do?” The Howard Avenue Chapel of Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
