Reva Rose Schultz Hopkins

The party got a little less lively this week. Reva Hopkins, an affable Biloxian, Mardi Gras reveler and devoted educator, passed away on August 23, 2021 while surrounded by family and friends. She was 48. A dedicated mother, beloved wife and treasured member of the Coast community, Reva’s impact on people is impossible to measure, describe or understand. While she was every party’s most flamboyant celebrator, Reva’s true-life work belonged in education, as a mentor and tutor to underprivileged children with special needs. Her work first started at the New Hope Center in Ocean Spring before joining the state’s public school system, where she spent nearly 20 years as one of the most influential caregivers to hundreds of Coast youths. In her most recent role as a positive behavior specialist at St. Martin Upper Elementary and Middle School, she touched the lives of children who needed it the most. An avid reader and well-educated, she completed her bachelor’s degree from Southern Miss and master’s degrees from William Carey and was in the process of obtaining a specialist degree from William Carey. Within the community, Reva was the life of every party she attended, known for her infectious laugh, witty nature and DJ skills. A member of the Gulf Coast Carnival Association, she was a fixture at Biloxi Mardi Gras events for decades, enlivening any room she entered and uplifting every person with which she engaged. She was known for her wise cracks, silly sayings and her ability to party longer than just about anyone else. “I’m in it,” she’d say, “to win it.” She was a regular at karaoke, often carrying with her a giant portable speaker and mic - a karaoke-on-the-go. She loved the water, the shade of an umbrella and cool boat rides at dusk. Reva’s hobbies extended beyond nightlife. She created and sold hundreds of pieces of clay pottery, many of them inspired by Coastal features and painted in an assortment of colors. She was an accomplished cook, proud of her boiled shrimp and crawfish, grilled filet mignon and buttery chocolate fudge. Reva’s name is recognizable on the Coast for more than one reason. Her father named his 76-foot-long shrimp boat after her. The Reva Rose, its green hull and white trimmings, was one of Biloxi’s most prosperous fishing vessels, both for its sheer usefulness and its community involvement. For years, it served as the “Blessing Boat” in the annual Biloxi Blessing of the Fleet ceremony. The Reva Rose still rides today. Reva was preceded in death by her father, Captain Thomas James Schultz Jr. She is survived by husband Glenn Hopkins; son Ezra Hopkins; mother Rose Ann Schultz; sisters Rose Love Dellenger (Stanley) and Dana Farris (Chris); brother Elliott Voivedich; nephews Ross Dellenger (Elizabeth), Colton Farris and Chance Farris (Elizabeth); and nieces Evelyn Dellenger, Ashley Rivera, Caitlyn Linduff and Callie Farris. Reva’s family would like to especially thank the medical staff at Memorial Hospital at Gulfport, physicians Ginny Blalack and Vince Pisciotta and all those friends and family members who generously showed their support. Reva’s family will hold a boat procession Friday, August 27, 2021 to lay her to rest in the Mississippi Sound, reuniting her with her father. Afterward, her family and friends will celebrate her life in Biloxi. In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to a college trust fund at Regions Bank in the name of her son Ezra Hopkins. Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home, Howard Avenue in Biloxi, is honored to serve the family of Reva Hopkins.
