Richard Allen Lane, Sr.

Richard “Dick” Allen Lane, Sr., age 88, passed away peacefully in his home in Ocean Springs, MS on November 14, 2021. Richard was born and raised in the Winterport, Maine area. Richard proudly served his country for 2 years in the Maine Army National Guard before transferring to the United States Air Force and serving another 20 years including the Vietnam War. Richard served at various bases around the country and the world before retiring as a MSGT. By his calculations, he was about 80 miles short, from having traveled around the world. After he retired from the Air Force, he again served his country for 20 years, as a clerk for the United States Postal Service. On one of his many tours of duty to Keesler Air Force Base on the Mississippi Gulf Coast, he met the love of his life, Bertha Westphal and they married in 1960. They had 5 children and moved back to the coast in 1969 to raise their family in Ocean Springs. A “Mr. Fix It”, he loved to tinker in his shed and help his neighbors and friends. He regaled everyone with his stories of growing up in Maine and his military anecdotes. He loved being around people and bragging about his children. He was a great father and friend to many and will be greatly missed. Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Bertha Westphal Lane; mother, Eunice Moody; and daughter-in-law, Kaye Piner Lane. Survivors include daughters, Brenda Lane, Melody Lane (Scott) Reissig, Marie Lane (David) Caillavet, Emily Lane (Frank) Glave; son, Richard “Ricky” Lane, Jr.; a brother, Austin Moody; eleven grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.
