Reverend Roger Wayne Alewine Sr., 83, a longtime resident of Gulfport, MS, and a resident of Franklin NC since 2016 passed away Thursday January 7, 2021 in Franklin NC.
Born in Red Bank SC, on October 31, 1937, he was the son of the late Lonnie and Ileen Goodwin Alewine. Reverend Alewine was a graduate of Lexington High School, in Lexington SC. He served in the National Guard until 1957. Reverend Alewine received his Bachelor of Music, from Mars Hill University in Mars Hill NC and later received his Masters 0f Divinity in Christian Education from New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary.
Reverend Alewine was Associate Pastor of First Baptist Church, Gulfport from 1985 until his retirement in October 1999. After his retirement he served churches across the MS Gulf Coast, as interim pastor, and sometimes interim minister of music. He also served as minister of music at First Baptist Franklin NC from 1980-1985.
Alewine was an avid golfer and played every chance he could. He loved playing with his son and grandchildren. He also was a big Atlanta Braves and New Orleans Saint Fan.
Besides his parents he was preceded in death by his brother Larry Alewine and sisters; Lois Alewine, Evelyn Alewine and Miriam Alewine,
He is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Patricia “Anne” Sox Alewine of Franklin NC; Daughter Lindy (Jerry) Blanton of Franklin NC. ; son, Wayne (DeAnn) Alewine of Gulfport MS; sisters Pat Miles and Nettie Alewine of Lexington SC, five Grandchildren, Tyler (April) Blanton, Logan (Rebekah) Blanton, Ryland Alewine, Savannah Alewine, Skylar Alewine; and two great grandchildren, Charlotte Alewine and Camilla Fisher .
Celebration of Life will be held at First Baptist Gulfport MS on Saturday January 23 at 2pm. Mask and social distancing required
