Mr. Sargent P. Mellen, Sr., age 97, died in Gulfport on Saturday, September 19, 2020. Born in Brooklyn, New York on May 27, 1923, he has resided on the Gulf Coast since 1932. He graduated from Gulfport High School in 1942, served in World War II and graduated from Tulane University in 1949. He served in Korea and retired from the Reserves in 1982. Mr. Mellen served as President of the Mississippi-Gulfport Compress & Warehouses, Inc. And as the last President of the Gulf Ports Association. He was also an active flight instructor, both in air and on ground. He was a member of the Pass Christian Art Association and enjoyed portrait art. He is preceded in death by his wife, Dottie Irene Powers Mellen; his sons Jay Grenville Mellen and David Lawrence Mellen, Sr.; his parents, J. Grenville Mellen and Alys B. Mellen; and brother Delos G. Mellen. He is survived by his daughter, Marion Irene Gural of Euless, Texas; his son, Sargent P. “Sassy” (Anna) Mellen, Jr., of Long Beach, MS; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. The family prefers memorials to Long Beach Animal Control, 201 Alexander Road, Long Beach, MS 39560. The services will be private. Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Home, 15th Street, Gulfport is in charge of arrangements.
