William "Bill" Cummings Hollis

Bill Hollis, age 83, passed away peacefully on Monday, October 16, 2017. Bill was born in Biloxi, MS on May 21, 1934. He was the third son of Dr. Daniel and Vola Cummings Hollis. He graduated from Biloxi High School in 1952. He attended the University of Alabama where he received a degree in Aeronautical Engineering. While in college, Bill was a two year letterman in football, playing alongside with Bart Starr. After college, Bill followed the path of his older Brother Dan, and joined the U.S. Navy. His initial training as a pilot was in Pensacola, FL. After advanced training in Texas, Bill received his wings in 1962. After training in the A4 Skyhawk at Lemoore, CA, he received orders to Attack Squadron 153 and was deployed to the Western Pacific aboard the USS Coral Sea (CVA43). On completion of this mission, Bill was then selected to be a member of a small group of fighter pilots that deployed on the USS Kearsarge to the waters off of Vietnam. It was here that Bill received air medals and citations for bravery flying combat missions in support of American Forces on the ground in South Vietnam. Upon returning to the U.S., Bill received orders to Meridian, MS where he trained other pilots in their role as future Naval Aviators. After his assignment in Meridian, Bill separated from the Navy and returned to civilian life until his retirement. Bill was a kind, handsome, intelligent man, who loved the Gulf Coast, his cats, and his family. He was an avid sailor and especially enjoyed racing with Gene Wallet and crew aboard the Saga. He was truly loved by all who knew him. Bill is preceded in death by his parents, his two brothers, Daniel, Jr. and Charles Dixie Hollis. He is survived by his daughter, Trudy Stegall (Rick), grandchildren, Logan and Ashlyn Stegall, his sister in law Vesta Hollis, several nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews who all adored him. A special thanks to his two wonderful caregivers, Sara Hilbun and Joani Taylor. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to any Animal Shelter or Wildlife rescue of your choice.
