Alice Sue Shumate

Alice Sue Shumate, 88, of Biloxi, MS, gained her wings on Sunday, March 1, 2026, in Gulfport, MS.

Sue was born on October 3, 1937, in North Wilkesboro, NC, to Lora Mae Faw Church and Troy Alton Church. In 1958, she married Samuel Rex Shumate, and together they raised their family while working in North Carolina. Following her husband’s passing, Sue moved to Biloxi, MS in 2004 where she became a Pharmacy Technician at Save Rite Pharmacy in Ocean Springs. In her retirement, Sue spent countless hours cross-stitching beautiful pieces of artwork for all her family and friends, reading books and spending time with her friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Samuel Rex Shumate; her parents, Lora Mae Faw Church and Troy Alton Church; her son, Ira Dewitt Shumate II; her grandson, Gary Daniel Minton; her sisters, Janie English and Mattie Blackburn; her brother, Leon Church; and her infant siblings, Beatrice Mae Church and Tommy Lee Church.

Sue is survived by her daughters, Vickie (Bobby) Lovette and Sue Ellen (Ronnie) Minton; her grandchildren, Amy (Shaun) Baker, Christopher Dale (DJ) Minton and Ira Dewitt Shumate III; her great-grandchildren, William (Ashley) Baker, Samantha “SJ” Baker, Noah Minton and Gray Minton; and her fur grandbabies, Gizmo, Khloe “Koko”, Kourtney, Max, Sadie Grace and Lily Rose.

The family has respectfully requested no flowers. Donations may be made in memory of Alice Sue Shumate to the American Lung Association or the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 6704, Hagerstown, MD 21741.

Private family service will be held at Mt. Zion Baptist Church Cemetery.
