Anthony “Tony” Dale Smith, 76, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, with his loving niece, Vanessa (Nessie Girl) by his side.
Tony was born on September 27, 1949, in Biloxi, Mississippi, to William O. Smith, Sr. & Bessie Barnes Smith. He grew up on Back Bay with a strong work ethic and a kind heart that stayed with him throughout his life. After graduating from D’Iberville High School, he proudly served his country before beginning a long career in construction. He was known by many as a boxer, a boat captain, a diver and a welder. He was also known for his honesty, dependability, and willingness to help anyone in need. Tony received many honors while serving in the Army; National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, along with Expert Rifleman & Sharpshooter honors. After serving his country, he went on to serve his community by rebuilding the VFW Post of Biloxi after Hurricane Katrina, became the Commander of the same post for several years, was a lifetime member of the VFW, lifetime member of the NRA, an active member of the Fleur de Lis Society (French Club) and the Moose Lodge. He was considered an amazing master jack of all trades and was always there to lend a helping hand and offer his expertise whenever possible. Those who knew him say he was “Good as Gold” and “Tough as Nails” and there was nothing he couldn’t do and wouldn’t do for his fellow man.
Tony was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, woodworking, watching football, and cooking for his friends and family. He rarely met a stranger and was always ready to go “honky tonkin”! He loved country life, where his many projects kept him busy. His wisdom and knowledge of life touched everyone who ever knew him.
He is survived by his brother, William O. Smith, Jr. (Karen) and his sister, Victoria Smith Hill, twenty-one nieces & nephews, many extended family members, and dear friends. His life was enriched by the presence of his niece, Vanessa Smith Stanley (Pat), whose steadfast love and care were a constant source of support, strength and happiness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, William O. Smith, Sr. & Bessie Barnes Smith, his brothers, Donald E. Smith, Sr. (Judy), Douglas W. Smith, Sr., Alvin E. Smith, Sr., Daniel T. Smith and his sisters, Leila Smith Creel, Rachel Smith Preatorius (Gerald), Genevieve Smith Gunn (Edward), Deborah Smith Clowers (Don) and baby girl Mona M. Smith.
We are grateful to the many friends and family members who provided comfort and support during Tony’s final days.
A visitation will be held at Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home on Howard Avenue in Biloxi on Friday, July 10th, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. followed by a service from 1:00p.m. – 2:00p.m. Burial will take place immediately following (2:30 p.m.) at the Biloxi VA Cemetery where he will receive full military honors.
