Gulfport

Barbara Louise Walker, 85, of Gulfport, MS passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2025, in Gulfport.

Barbara was born in Detroit, MI on December 11, 1939, to the late Hildred and Thelma Bynum. From this union, Barbara was the second of three children; Donald Bynum and the late Hildred Salaam were her cherished brothers. Barbara married Ivory Walker and from this union came two loving daughters; Iris M. Rucker and Terina L. Harvey (Frederick); two grandchildren, Eboni L.M. Williams (Terrance) and Kyle Rucker, and four great grandchildren, Collin I Davis (Sarah), Conner L. William, Charlie M. Williams and Cobie G. Williams. Barbara was grateful to also love three bonus daughters, Yolanda Nagy, Tina Harris and Vilma Cespedes.

Barbara graduated from Southwestern High School and later served the City of Detroit in various capacities while earning a bachelor’s degree in psychology from the University of Michigan. As a teenager, Barbara was a majorette and dancer. She received the Lord as her savior and joined the Seventh Day Adventist Church where she remains a member to this day.

She loved and worshipped the Lord with all her heart. She was committed to her family and always made time for her friends from near and far away places. Barbara often provided guidance and wise counsel to family and friends in need of encouragement and prayer. She loved to dance and dance to Caribbean beats. The music and lyrics spoke to her soul and spirit. Her laughter was contagious and so was her electric energy on stage while jammin’ to steel pans and maracas. She felt loved by her extended family in Trinidad where she called her true home. Barbara was affectionately referred to as “Trini to the Bone”. Barbara was loved by many. She will be most remembered for her kind and joyful nature, spirituality, strength and zest and passion for life.

Barbara was a blessing and will remain in our hearts as she begins her divine journey with the Lord. We place our trust in the Lord and know that he is good all the time. Our mom, granny, gigi, sister and friend rest in the Lord’s hands now. We love and will miss her so much.
