Barbara Nelson Weiss, affectionately known as “Mom” “Aunt Barbara” and “Ms. Barbara”, passed away on Monday, November 2, 2026, one day before her 87th birthday, at her home in Biloxi, MS.
Barbara was born on November 3, 1939 in Talladega, AL to Howard Alonzo Nelson and Barbara O’Donnell. She moved to Biloxi, MS on October 28, 1942, where her father was stationed during WWII. She grew up on “The Campground Holy Land”.
Barbara graduated from Sacred Heart School in 1958. In the 1950’s, she traveled for work as a mystery shopper. In the 1960’s, she worked for Grand Drug Store and Kress'. In the 1970’s, she was a homemaker. In the 1980’s, she worked in childcare at KAFB Child Development Center and in 1999 she wore a hard hat, helping with the opening of the Beau Rivage one year before retiring.
Barbara was a devout Catholic and a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and Nativity BVM Cathedral. She enjoyed listening to 50’s music, playing cards, reading novels and gardening. She would get so excited when one of her plants bloomed. Mom would say, “I have to tell you, my Desert Rose bloomed!” Her favorite colors were blue and green and she had a blue car and a green house! Barbara was an avid dog lover and one of her favorite comments was “It’s a beautiful day”.
She loved her family and would light up when talking about them or looking at pictures. She often said “I have the best neighbors” and would never leave the “Holy Land” in Biloxi.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her siblings, John “Jack” Howard Nelson and Kenneth Allen Nelson; and her beloved dog, Wags.
Barbara’s survivors included her former spouse, Thomas Edward (Carol) Weiss; her children, Tracy Laura West, Stephen Robert (Karla) Weiss, Julie Karen (Robbie) Robinson and Debra Lynn (Randy) Wells; eight grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
The family wishes to extend a special thanks to her dear friend, Tammy Pruitt for spending time with her; she loved you. She also cherished her friend Liz Corso Joachim and her other Saturday afternoon mass friends from Nativity BVM. Thank you.
A Memorial Mass will be held at Nativity BVM Cathedral on Saturday, November 7, 2026 at 11:00 am. Friends may visit from 10:00 am until mass time.
Bradford-O'Keefe Funeral Home is honored to serve the family of Barbara Nelson Weiss.
