Ocean Springs

Bruce Burton Tolar, born on October 21, 1954, in Hollandale, Mississippi, passed peacefully surrounded by his children on October 7, 2025.

He was raised on a farm by the Sunflower River in Sharkey County, MS, until his family moved to Lake Charles, LA, in 1966. After graduating from Lake Charles High in 1972, Bruce went to Louisiana State University’s School of Architecture and earned his bachelor’s degree in 1977. He remained a devoted LSU Tigers fan throughout his life. After beginning his architectural career in Houston, Texas, Bruce made his home in Ocean Springs, MS in 1979, where he poured his heart and creativity into the community he loved.

Bruce’s work spans throughout Mississippi, Louisiana, Florida, Arkansas, Texas, Georgia, and Alabama. He especially helped shape the fabric of Ocean Springs through residential, commercial, and civic projects, including the Marshall Park Gazebo renovation with the Historic Ocean Springs Association (HOSA), the downtown bus stops, and Christus Victor Lutheran Church. To list all the contributions Bruce made would take chapters.

Following Hurricane Katrina, Bruce played a vital role in rebuilding the Gulf Coast, helping design and promote the “Katrina Cottages,” which became a cornerstone of the region’s recovery and remain a testament to his belief in resilient, human-centered design. The Katrina Cottages drew national attention and even warranted a visit to the project that would become “Cottage Square” on Government Street by then First Lady Laura Bush.

Standing at 6’7”, Bruce was a larger-than-life presence in every way; a gentle giant known for his booming laugh, endless stories, and generous heart. Known affectionately as “Mayor Bruce,” he could often be found chatting with friends and colleagues around town, sketching new ideas, or cheering on his Tigers. His dedication to his craft, his community, and his family made him a beloved figure whose impact will endure for generations.

Above all, Bruce loved his family deeply. He worked tirelessly to provide for them and took immense pride in their accomplishments.

Bruce loved big, dreamed boldly, and lived fully. His creativity, humor, and compassion will continue to inspire all who knew him. True to form, he was a Fighting Tiger until the very end.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Clifton Monroe Tolar and Ada Mae Bain.

Bruce is survived by his three children: Bradley Tolar, Christy (Brandon) Tolar, and Allie (Myles) Anderson; his grandson, Connor Tolar; his sister, Laura Tolar; his former wife and mother of his children, Susan Tolar; and his chosen partner, for 16 years, Kathy Roberts.

He did not want a ceremony; therefore we hope to honor him in our own ways. Whether gathering in downtown Ocean Springs for a drink or a meal, watching the sunset on the beach, or enjoying a good tailgate, we will find ways to keep his memory alive.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to Louisiana State University at giveLSU.org in honor of Bruce’s lifelong passion for architecture and Tiger baseball/football pride. Those wishing to honor his contributions to the Gulf Coast may also consider donating to a local Ocean Springs civic or historic organization.

A memorial paver recognizing his legacy will be placed by Mike the Tiger’s Habitat at LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, where his spirit will forever stand among fellow Tigers.

Bradford-O’Keefe Funeral Homes is honored to serve the family of Bruce Burton Tolar.
