Caroline Frances Houston Dunaway

Caroline Frances Houston Dunaway, beloved wife of Fred Dunaway for 67 years, daughter of Walter Cornelius and Mildred Houston, passed away on July 12, 2025, surrounded by friends and family at home.

Caroline loved life and lived it to its fullest. Born on December 23, 1936, in Laurel, Mississippi, she set out for the big city of Mobile in search of adventure. It was there, at the hosiery factory where they both worked, that she met Fred, who won her heart with poetry and quiet charm.

Together, they spent 21 years traveling the world, visiting 25 countries, while Fred served in the military. During their time stationed in Germany, Caroline learned to speak fluent German—an ability she kept sharp throughout her life.

Caroline was as determined as she was lively, spreading laugher wherever she went. In the 1970s—a time when few women held such roles—she worked her way up from secretary to stockbroker, blazing her own trail with grit and independence. She also learned to fly and got her pilots license, always eager to challenge herself and try something new.

Wherever the Dunaway’s lived, their home was the heart of the neighborhood, always filled with laughter, music, and a welcoming sense of community. Caroline loved to volunteer for causes close to her heart, giving generously of her time and energy.

Perhaps best known to the wider world as the “woman with the wine bottle,” a viral moment viewed by over 50 million people, Caroline’s true legacy is the joy and love she shared with those around her—always full of wit, sass, and revelry.

Caroline is survived by her adoring husband, Fred; daughter, Fran Dunaway and her wife, Naomi Gonzalez; son, Charles Hunter Dunaway; sister, Linda Young; sister, Geraldine Jefcoat and her husband, Doug; numerous nieces and nephews; and her granddogs, Maggie and Selkie, all of whom loved her dearly.

In lieu of a memorial service, the family has chosen to have a celebration of her amazing life. The event will take place on September 27, 2025. More details on location and time to follow.
