Charles G. Funk, aged 95, passed away from natural causes on June 18, 2024 in Gulfport, Mississippi. He was born on October 18, 1928 in Baltimore, Maryland, the son of Robert and Mary Funk. He grew up during the Great Depression, and then enlisted in the U. S. Army in October, 1945. He served with the Occupation Forces in Japan after the war, and then in combat with the 65th Infantry Regiment during the Korean War, where he earned the coveted Combat Infantryman’s Badge. He also earned the Bronze Star Medal along with other numerous awards and medals throughout his military career. He retired from the Army in 1967 with the rank of First Sergeant after 22 years of service. The military career of 1st Sergeant Funk reflected long and faithful service to the United States and exceptional fidelity and patriotism.
He then embarked on a second career with the United States Postal Service.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Robert and Stanley and his wife Hazel after 67 years of marriage. He is survived by his children, Robert (Wendy) of Manhattan, Kansas, Michael (Suzanne) of Chuluota, Florida, Steven of Oviedo, Florida, Patricia Weigand (Mike) of Long Beach, Mississippi, and Sandra Hollis (Nick) of Gulfport, Mississippi, nine grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather. Family was everything to him, and nothing made him happier than to be surrounded by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Although his family mourns his passing and will miss him terribly, he leaves behind a family legacy of love, devotion, and good memories.
He is now at peace in God’s presence and reunited with his loved ones in Heaven.
1st Sergeant Funk will be interred at the Biloxi National Cemetery in a private service with his family.
