Charles Q. Salisbury, Sr., age 95, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 21, 2026.

Charles was born on December 30, 1930, in Cressmont, Clay County, West Virginia. He grew up working on the land as a young farmer. Those early years shaped his character—steady, hardworking, humble, and deeply committed to those he loved.

Answering the call to serve his country, Charles enlisted in the United States Army in 1949. He served honorably with the 533rd Military Police Company in Germany from August 23, 1949, to November 25, 1952. Continuing his dedication to military service, he later enlisted in the United States Navy on February 1, 1957, where he built a long and distinguished career until his retirement on September 14, 1972, as a Machinist’s Mate Chief Petty Officer.

During his naval service, Charles served aboard several ships, including the USS Hyades (AF- 28), the USS Inchon (LPH-12), and twice aboard the USS Independence (CVA-62). He also served at the Naval Recruiting Station in Detroit, Michigan, and at Naval Station, Norfolk, Virginia. Charles also took pride in his role as a Navy recruiter, guiding others toward a path of service.

In recognition of his faithful service, he was awarded a Certificate of Appreciation from President Richard Nixon, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States. Even after retiring from active duty, Charles continued to support the mission of the Navy by working with the Navy Public Works Department for 37 years at the Norfolk Naval Operating Base, providing essential service and support to the installation he proudly called home. His commitment to service never wavered.

Outside of uniform, Charles was a devoted family man who valued hard work, loyalty, and perseverance. He was a man of quiet talents and simple joys. He loved woodworking, gardening, reading, and working with his hands—always building, fixing, or creating something useful or meaningful. His steady presence, gentle humor, and unwavering work ethic left a lasting impression on everyone who knew him.

Charles was preceded in death by his father, Vernon; his mother, Jennie; his brothers, Oris and Aldridge; and his beloved wife, Patronia.

He is survived by his children, Anna (and husband Ruben), Sherry, and Charles Jr.; his grandchildren, Kevin, Thomas, Crystal, Ashley, Derek, Casey, and Justin; and 13 great-grandchildren, who will continue to carry forward his legacy of strength, resilience, and love.

Charles will be remembered for his dedication, strength, and unwavering sense of duty—to his country, his work, and most importantly, the deep love he held for his family. His life stands as a lasting tribute to service, perseverance, and quiet integrity. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched and the example he set for future generations.

No services will be held at this time.
