Doris Montgomery Stojcich, a resident of D’Iberville, passed away peacefully on March 16th.
Doris is preceded in death by her beloved husband of 38 years, Wallace Paul Stojcich and is survived by her loving children Stephen A. Stojcich of Ocean Springs and Sharon Stojcich (Jeffrey) Barlow of Pascagoula and precious grandchildren Anna Barlow and Wallace Lane Barlow.
She is also preceded in death by her parents, Joseph H. Montgomery and Catherine Fountain Montgomery, siblings Marie Montgomery, James Montgomery, Leslie Montgomery, and Ursula Sherman. Survivors also include siblings Catherine Butterfield and Cecil Montgomery and numerous nieces, nephews and dear friends.
Doris was born and raised on Reynoir Street in Biloxi’s Back Bay neighborhood and was a 1948 graduate of Biloxi High School. She began a career as the manager of Austin’s women’s clothing store where she worked for over 15 years and later worked for, and retired from the Harrison County School District. She married the love of her life, Wallace Paul Stojcich of D’Iberville, in 1955 and celebrated their 38th anniversary before his death. Doris and Wally were members of numerous carnival organizations and were very socially active. Doris reigned as queen of Les Joyeaux in 1958 and queen of Les Femmes in 1963.
Doris adored her many nieces and nephews who all thought of her as a second mom. Doris had a very outgoing personality and made everyone she met feel welcomed and like a friend. She was a devout Catholic and was very active in Sacred Heart Parish where she served as president of the PTO, ran bingos and the po-boy booth at the annual parish bazaar, and participated in numerous mission trips to Saltillo Mexico. For her dedicated service, she was honored with the Bishop’s Service Cross Award in 1985.
Doris loved to travel – cruises in particular, and traveled extensively with her husband Wallace and numerous friends, groups, and family. She enjoyed spending summers on Dog River in Mobile where numerous friends would gather in their RV’s. Many carefree hours were occupied by spirited card games, bingo, and trips to the dog track. She also enjoyed going to the casinos and her monthly pokeno club where she was able to enjoy being around her group of friends. Doris adored her two grandchildren and loved to spend time with them. She especially enjoyed frequent trips to Pensacola with them to her son Stephen’s weekend house where family and friends would gather.
Although Doris had been a member of Sacred Heart Parish most of her life, her wishes were for her funeral to take place at her childhood parish of Blessed Francis Xavier Seelos (formerly St. John’s) where she received all of her sacraments and was married. In poetic fashion, Doris passed away on the 22nd anniversary of her beloved husband’s death.
Doris will be missed tremendously by her children, grandchildren, extended family and friends. Her children would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to all family and friends whose loving support helped them through this difficult time of grief.
