Dorothy Maureen Bush, "Miss Dot", of Gulfport, left us for a better place on Friday, February 27, 2026 after a brief illness. She passed quietly, surrounded by her loving family.
Miss Dot spent most of her life on the Mississippi Gulf Coast although she was born in Bunkie, Louisiana. After graduating from Biloxi High School, her young adult years were spent raising her children and caring for animals. She would sacrifice her time, money and energy to bottle feed orphaned wildlife or domestic pets because she believed every life was important. After Hurricane Camille, when abandoned animals were roaming and shelter resources were scarce, she built enclosures and over the next few years, rescued and fostered hundreds of animals on her property. After her children were grown, she entered the next phase of her life and became a pharmacy technician at Calvert - Carraway and then at Beach Pharmacy for 42 years until her retirement in December 2023. During this time, she also baked cakes, cookies and even catered weddings for her friends and family. Her rescues were not limited to animals. She also shared her compassion with people in need that crossed her path, whether it was a hot meal, clothing or emotional support, there was always a place at her table and room in her heart.
Mrs. Bush and her late husband, Joe were active at St. Thomas Catholic Church in Long Beach where she taught CCD classes for many years.
Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Bertrand Marsland and Dorothy Sutrain, siblings, Ann Wilson, Kathleen Carter and Alan Marsland and here late husbands, Raymond Rowell and Joseph Bush.
She leaves behind her children, Darrolyn Hunt, Wayne Rowell, Beverly Vogel, and Cynthia Dubrow and grandchildren Michael Wayne Rowell, Christine Smart, Jordan, Mikenzy and Chase Dubrow.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations in her name to the ASPCA.
